View Full Version : I am addicting to Buying

I am worried because I spend a lot of money on things. Most of the things I buy I do not really need. I am worried that I will have no savings for my golden years, and they won't be golden at all. I know this, yet still make the decision to buy stuff, and regret it right after the purchase is made. I think part of me gets off on the thrill of the purchase. Thankfully, the things I buy never are big ticket items, but the little shit adds up. My most recent purchase was $230 and I have been kicking myself since. It was for a phone, and I didn't need it, mine works fine. I just wanted another.
I spoke to my therapist about it, and he didn't seem too concerned, but I kind of trumped it down. I know some bi polar people do similar shit and they burn their bridges behind them as they go though life. I think I have a slight touch of that. I wish I could be reprogrammed.

I think allot of people buy things to self treat ourselves for depression at some level it makes you feel better at least for a little while.I think its hard to sepera(e wants and needs sometimes.

do you equate things with happiness?
i have a friend with the same issue, he loves nothing more then buying shit on ebay, then getting that box in the mail and opening it.
sadly he calls himself a "transformers collector" who has bought and sold his collections 4-5 times, each time losing money.
i just feel sorry for the f'n guy.

maybe "window shop" by even when online shopping never actually checking out in the end
Just place them in the basket and then run.

If you feel it was not a wise purchase, just take it back and return it and get your money back. I've done that a bunch of times when I got buyers remorse. You'll feel better like you kinda caught yourself and learned from a bone-headed purchase.

I just bought a Music Hall MMF 5.1 turntable even though I already had a perfectly awesome Rega P2. I just love new toys.

Though I love to get new stuff, sometimes I just want to buy stuff. My parents are both too old to want to be bothered with what to buy all their grandkids for Christmas and birthdays. They give me the money, and I go on huge shopping sprees. It really does help with the urge to just go out and spend money. Maybe you can find people who want you to shop for them.

I have this same problem. For awhile I was buying big ticket items, like a van, a computer, a printer, that kind of thing. I was told I was bipolar. I took some pills for it and they whacked me out. I am not bipolar. I quit taking the pills. It's just I have never been good at money management.
What I have found out is that I have too much time on my hands. I don't go shopping anymore except for groceries. That is even hard for me too because I shop at Target and that is a superstore here. I always end up in the baby section, book section, etc. I am trying to shop at the local grocery store to avoid unnecessary purchases.
I was told this piece of advice "If you really think you need it, go home and sleep on it. When you wake up in the morning if you still think you need it, then go buy it." This helps a lot for impulse buying.

I always thought it was "if you really think you need it, go home and sleep with it. When you wake up in the morning if you let it use your toothbrush, it's love." Goes to show what I know.

NO, NO, NO!!! It's "If you really think you need it, set it free. If it sleeps on you in the morning, it's yours."

Are we talking about my one night stands, or my bulldogs?

I think I horde certain things. I like multiples of some stuff. But I tend to obsess on certain things. I think the eBay experience is what did it to me, especially if its an auction. There is a thrill of the race to "win" when bidding against another bidder for the same item, and I think that that thrill gets my blood going. I know the easy fix is ti just not go on eBay. But I buy when shopping in Target and Walmart too. I try and be focused and just go to the area where the stuff I really need is. But then, by magnetic attraction, I am drawn over by the flashlights and always feel I need yet another fucking flashlight. I have dozens of them.

I have got the flashlight thing too, don't know how many I have. I love electronics too. the flashlight thing manifests itself every time I get on the Snap on truck, I think my tool man knows it too.

I stopped by my parents house unannounced this morning but they were not home, they were probably at church. I peeked in the kitchen window and saw the usual stuff my father keeps next to his table setting: Remote, newspaper, pen knife, salt and pepper shakers, sugar bowl, his medication with his timer for telling him when to take what, and a Flashlight!
I dont keep my flashlights next to me, but there is a small one on my keychain. I have a few in the bedroom, some in the car, some in the garage and basement and 3 or 4 in the kitchen drawers. I can get to one within 4 steps at any given time!

streamlight makes a 2x AAA led
http://www.streamlight.com/product/product.aspx?pid=133
light that I have in my pocket most of the time. This is a great small size light. I also have a 1x AAA version of the same light clipped to a vent in my truck.
The one that I find most useful when a need a light is my headlamp, nothing beats "hands free" when you need both hands.
I think I got this addiction from my father, I gave him one of the ones linked above for Christmas, and he to usually has it in his pocket.
