A couple dead spots, but the jokes that hit, hit big for me. The breakfast club line, the 'am I deaf' line, the Asbergers line, all really made me laugh. The arab kid was great.
And I like the premise. Joel McHale is hilarious. I'll definitely be a watcher.

No doubt. I can say the same for Community though, it's almost like the showrunners and writers have all this built up pressure for the first few episodes of the season, but by #4-5, they get into it, and the quality improves. Hype usually kills episodes. Take The Office, the most hyped episodes always stink - Superbowl and now the Wedding episodes all had these cheesy storylines and gags, it was like watching a CBS sitcom, sad.

The ANIMATION was cute but, other than that... it felt flat. The actors were clearly not in the room together when they recorded their voices. There was NONE of the show's usual overlapping quips and conversations. None of the snappy patter. And none of those moments wherein the entire group talks over each other. It really felt stale.

I have to give them credit for doing something new but it was missing something. This whole season feels that way. It's like they're trying too hard to come up with episodes that are different.
Maybe they need to get the cast back in class and throw in an occasional special episode. I also preferred it when Senor Chang was a teacher rather than a student.

Bingo.
The thing that makes Community somewhat unique is realism.
There is no narrator, no flashbacks, no whip-pans to some other location, nothing. It's entirely "real".
(unlike Arrested Dev, Always Sunny,30 Rock, Family Guy....)
I also like that they never really leave the campus. The "spaceship" episode, Troy's birthday episode, and the animated episode are, easily, the worst episodes of the series. Not coincedentally... they are the episodes where the producers are attempting something different for the sake of being different. It's gimmicky.

Real? What show are you watching?
They abandoned any pretense of reality as of the paintball episode. The show is a cartoon now. Each episode some new wacky shit happens, then the next week they start over like nothing ever happened.
Not to mention them constantly breaking the 4th wall...even having the fucking characters talk about how "meta" they're being. You are literally RETARDED if you think one of this show's attributes is its realism.
fezident
12-11-2010, 10:56 AM
I'm obviously referring to the construct of the show.
The show itself is presented as "real". Obviously, the paintball episodes falls under the "gimmick" heading that I mentioned earlier.
The show DOES have continuity. They make references to past episodes and classes. They graduate. Pierce is still in a wheelchair, etc etc.
The CONSTRUCTION of the show, as clearly voiced several times on the dvd commentary by the creators and producers and cast, is to keep in based in reality in terms of time. No cut-aways, no whip pans, no flashbacks, no voiceovers.. and to keep it grounded.
StanUpshaw
12-11-2010, 12:13 PM
Sorry, there's nothing obvious about the gibberish you just typed.
It sounds like what happened is that you listened to some DVD commentaries and heard the creators backhandedly shitting on other series and tried to pass it off as an original thought.
It still makes no sense why it's more "real" to have your wacky, utterly implausible gags occur linearly, rather than have the wacky, utterly implausible gags occur in the "Remember that time when..." style. Explain how that is "real" or "grounded".

Every single sitcom is unrealistic.
No person has the crazy DAILY adventures and misunderstandings of Lucille Ball, or Ralph Kramden, or Jack Tripper, and on and on and on. The very nature of a sitcom has to be unrealistic.
Some sitcoms take it a step beyond that. The very laws of physics don't apply. Fonzie has magic powers. People can't get injured. That kinda thing.
Lately, there is pattern forming wherein sitcoms cut-away from the characters to reveal a moment/flashback/dream etc. These moments are not "real". These moments are visible only to us, the home viewer. The other characters on the show, in those moments, do not see what we see.
Community has a few dozen episodes in the can. Within that lot, only a view of episodes break the rules of THEIR reality in THEIR sitcom universe. That's what made the paintball episode so much different than the rest of the series. It's a wink to the audience. Same goes for when Abed, the character who is obsessed with movies/tv says aloud "oh, this is a bottle episode" or what have you. It's a wink.
That's the reality I was referring to.
We're not talking about a documentary here. Obviously, a man as truly stupid as Pierce could never have amassed a fortune as a CEO of a company. No more than, "a long time ago, in a galaxy far far away" everybody speaks in english and looks & dresses exactly like us... right down to our shoelaces and leather belts.
Of course I understand these differences in "realism.. for the sake of the story".
In Community, they(the creators) carved a niche for THEIR reality and for their tone of the show... and now they're breaking it.

The CONSTRUCTION of the show, as clearly voiced several times on the dvd commentary by the creators and producers and cast, is to keep in based in reality in terms of time. No cut-aways, no whip pans, no flashbacks, no voiceovers.. and to keep it grounded.

And unless you are incredibly stupid, Community college does not last 3 years...
Isn't it 18m-24 mos tops Associate Degree school?
So the premise as it pertains to a long run was flawed to begin with...

This season has had its ups and downs but Im not shocked by this at all. This show never had good ratings. Season 1 avg only 5 million viewers and ranked 97th overall and last season avg 4.4 million and was ranked 115 overall. I was more surprised that it came back for a 3rd season after those ratings. Too much competition on Thursdays at 8!

Its 4 full time semesters if you take a full college load of 12-15 credits, so you could get your asst degree in 2 years. The show was only doing 1 semester per season if Im correct?! But that alone would be 4 seasons plus I dont think they were taking that many classes so they could have strung this along for 7 or 8 seasons if the show was doing well.

Well, they always seem to have other classes other than the ones on the show.
And Jeff wants to get done with it ASAP to get back his law degree and what not, i wouldn't think he would stay there long.

I losing interest in this show as well.
Originally the main character was Jeff interacting with the characters around him. He was the fast-talking lawyer; now Joel McHale looks tired all the time and that unshaven look is getting old. The show revolves around Abed and Troy too much.
John Goodman's character hasn't added much but I like what they've done to expand Dean Pelton's role. Except for Jeff, they're trying too hard to cram in wackiness for every character in every episode and it's losing it's effectiveness.
I'll probably hang in there for the duration, but I record the shows now and get to them later.

That was out of the creators control. The 7 timeline episode was supposed to be the 3rd episode of the season, unfortunately it wasn't completed in time, so they aired it as the 4th. If you notice, Troy and Abed's apartment number is 303 signifying Season 3 episode 3.
Still, even with a 2 week break, it's awfully close to air similar episodes, just looked worse having to air them back-to-back.

Just listened to an interview with Joel McHale and Adam Carolla.
Adam asked him -point blank- "I heard the show was canceled... is that true?"
Joel replied "the official word is the we've been 'benched'. We will not be part of the winter schedule, but we were told that we WILL be returning in the fall."
Whatever THAT means.... it doesn't look good for the future of the show.

I heard that Carolla podcast too. I think it means that if there's a hole in NBC's fall schedule, they'll be picked-up. This is what CBS has been doing with "Rules of Engagement" for 4 years.
I've been watching "Community" since the first episode and I understand the characters. The problem is it must be very difficult for new viewers to get into. It'll be hard for the ratings to improve (although it will probably be one of those shows that does well in syndication if they can come up with enough episodes).
Hah, song Troy was humming in last episode is real:
