they were the first "counter culture" group I came across. On tv, She was striking as a lean, tall blonde singing between 2 beatnicks.
I forgot how many hit songs PPM had. The last time I saw her she had blown up due to the steroids she was taking. You could tell she was ill.

My article on mary for suite101 magazine http://folkmusic.suite101.com/article.cfm/folk_singer_mary_travers_dies
40 something years later, people have forgotten just how important pp and m were to music. they helped launch bob dylan's career, they were the most popular band on earth up until the time of the beatles, they were a leading voice in the civil rights movement, i could go on and on.
one of my earliest memories is of my aunt (also a folksinger) singing me puff the magic dragon and playing on guitar.
Dude!

Well that just sucks. I met her a few years ago at a Bat Mitzvah. She was going to town on a bag of lays potato chips. She must have brought them with her because no chips were served. Who brings food to a Long Island thrown Bat Mitzvah?

My friend Lonnie's father was a state cop back in the 80's and got us front row seats at the Hatch Shell, which is an open performance space along the Charles River in Boston. There were a bunch of bands that night, but we arrived right before Mary went on.
Before taking the stage, she wandered along with five or six little kids in tow. She stopped right in front of us, yanked a thumb over her shoulder and said "Beat it..."in an old lady smoker voice.
I think the seats were specially reserved for these kids - and maybe they were sick.
But at the time Mary Travers scared me silly.
