Sigh.
EXCLUSIVE: I'm told that ICM's actor Christoph Waltz who won Best Actor at the Cannes Film Festival for playing a Nazi in Inglourious Basterds (and is a shoo-in for an Oscar nomination) has now been cast as villain Chudnofsky in Sony's The Green Hornet opposite Seth Rogen and Cameron Diaz. Since Quentin Tarantino's Inglourious Basterds came out -- and crossed the $100M mark this weekend -- Waltz has been offered a lot of big movies by a lot of big directors. And he's getting big bucks now. How great he's found success at age 52. Big breaks like this keep actors in Hollywood still hopeful...

This might be an ichiban-worthy item that could cause RB to go on another rant about brilliant actors slumming for paydays in movies that pander to morons.

So what? Good for him. He stole the show in Inglorious Basterds and I look forward to seeing him in more American roles. He's been an actor for years in Germany and probably never had the chance to collect a huge paycheck. I'd go for it too.

So what?
I just thought it was kind of disheartening that his first move after achieving global recognition with a brilliant performance is chasing the money in a movie with Seth Rogen and Cameron Diaz. I don't care that Michel Gondry is directing because he proved with Be Kind Rewind that he's not above making a god-awful movie.

So what? Tarantino proved with Death Proof that HE'S not above making a God-awful movie and he still pulled off IB. Working with Michel Gondry is still a pretty smart move.

who says he is chasing the money? His roles in German & Austrian television and movies were mostly serious roles, I can't blame him for exploring new characters and roles outside of Germany.

Jackie Earle Haley followed up his Oscar nominated role in Winged Creatures with Rorschach in Watchmen, and he was arguably one of the best performances.
It's just too early to tell if he's going to phone this in or create a great villain.

God forbid anyone have fun at their job. Actors really unfairly get charged with the artistic quality of the films they're in. You can be a good actor in a terrible movie, it doesn't make you a shitty actor.
I just think its straight balls to look at a guy who has a lot of freedom in his career and then shit on him for not making the decisions you think he should. Whats the point of having that freedom if you're beholden to people who think they have more refined artistic sensibility than everyone else.
2 small corrections for this thread: I dont know that you'd call this a comic movie, wasn't it more known for radio and film? And Deathproof is good.

This would've been so much better if Kevin Smith wrote and directed it.

1997 called. It wants its confidence in Kevin Smith making a good movie back.

Zack and Miri and Clerks 2 were not that bad. In fact, they were pretty entertaining. he'll never make anything as good as Clerks, but who will?
Plus, I'm grading on a curve. Any shit movie with Kevin Smith behind it is much better than any shit movie without Kevin Smith behind it. At least there are going to be dick and pussy jokes in it, and that's always a reason to see it.

It's fine for an actor to take a role for a big fatass paycheck every now and then.
The cautionary tale here, though, is Nicholas Cage, who's gone from being a well-thought of actor to a total joke (NOT THE BEES!) because he's gone for the paycheck way too often. And I think Michael Caine's never gotten the recognition he deserves either due to some questionable choices he made for the cash.
But I don't see anything here to get worked up about. Good for Christoph.

Adam Carolla interviewed Waltz on his podcast. Waltz seemed like a genuinely decent guy who is happy to be working and thrilled he got this break with IB.
I think he'll make Green Hornet a better movie. I hope he does get a big paycheck. I doubt he's rich, he's been doing German TV for years.

I for one and disgusted at all of you so willing to give away American film roles to dirty foreigners.

Has Kevin Smith ever written anything other than a dick joke?
And you cannot be trying to tell us that Zack & Miri or Clerks 2 were anything other than abortions?

Was it great cinema? No. But I was entertained.

generally speaking, yes. i still don't get the whole spiderman appeal. a borefest, but one could make the argument that IG played out like a comic book. you can almost see the storyboard in every scene, and i thoroughly enjoyed this movie.
so maybe it's the content and acting, as oppossed to the origin.
