I really dug the interview. Strange thing, though. He kept talking about letters and documents from back in the day that he wished he still had. I follow a photoblog called Detroitfunk, and he documents architecture and history through photography. His stuff tend to focus on abandoned and demolition (seems like a cottage industry up there) and they demolished some Motown buildings back in 06 (not the original buildings on West Grand Blvd, mind you). They pretty much abandoned as they stood in 1972 when they moved the whole operation out to LA. So it had been wide open for 30 plus years, but dfunk went in and there was still a lot of original documents, letters, recording notes, copies of checks, etc... He did the right thing and turned them over to the Detroit Public Library special collection, of course. I wonder if Smokey knows they are out there and being preserved for posterity...

His rendition of nora jones hit was creepy and awful. I loved smokey in his day. First tape. I ever owned, but the guy was too pretentious and his voice out if context made him sound like a trannie (tranny?), not up on my tranny spelling. Sorrerrrrrry

Felt in the beginning of the interview, Ron was pulling teeth...Smokey is not a spring chicken..but it was listenable.

It started a little slow but after a few minutes Ron got Smokey to let his guard down. I was a very good interview.

Who did the production? I think it was very well done - The lead-in to My Girl timing up with Smokey wa superb. If Chris Stanley did this then I completely understand why Earl is comepletely unmissed.

I'm sure it was Stanley. I agree, it did sound great. I actually called in yesterday and mentioned that I was going to isolate that track with the intro and put it on my iPod. If anyone wants it, here you go:
