I figured Id make this a general thread for the US Soccer Team.
Big game tonight on ESPN Classic vs El Salvador. We need the points here. US is in 3rd place for World Cup qualification, with Mexico 1 point behind them.
They also play Trinidad and Tobago on September 9, also on ESPN Classic. Overall it should be two easy wins.

Horrible referee. Too many whistles. Not letting the game flow.

Great effort by US tonite, hated the ref - way too many whistles, and the phantom offsides on jozy in the 2nd was out of control...but we take the 3 and roll into wednesday looking for another W and one step closer to south africa.
Also fuck mexico

well, much as i'd like them to lose, mexico's win moved the us from tied for 2nd to tied for 1st in their group. the us really has too much talent to struggle with these teams, especially at home.

Well, they played without two starters in Onyewu and Demerit. Gooch had to serve a 1 game suspension and Demerit had a minor groin injury. Both should be set for wednesdays game. I hope Charlie Davies is able to play.

Standings as of 9/06
GD Pts
Honduras +7 13
United States +4 13

Costa Rica −3 12
El Salvador −3 5
Trinidad and Tobago −7 5
each team has 3 left to play. US is @ Trinidad and Tobago on Wednesday. Away @ Honduras on Oct. 10th. Last game is Home against Costa Rica on Oct. 14.
Top 3 teams automatically qualify. The 4th place team plays a Home and Home series with the 5th place team from the CONMEBOL region.

What work did they do to make Americans care about soccer?
These games have been going on for decades. You don't get an automatic spot in the WC unless you're the host nation.

recently the US has been doing a ton to try to get americans more into soccer, including bringing more games to the US. TV shows more soccer at better times. They are tryin to make it big here.

beating then world #1 Spain in the Confederations Cup helped alot. Soccer is going to grow and grow here. The better the US team, the better MLS and any other soccer leagues will be here.

bumping this.
US vs Trinidad and Tobago tonight at 6:30 on ESPN Classic. Why its not in HD, I don't know. But I expect the US to win. T&T are in last place in the standings with nothing to play for. The US just needs to make sure they don't end up forth at the end of all the qualifying games. I would not want to potentially face Argentina in a play off.

USA wins 1-0.
Mexico beat Honduras 1-0.
So now the US is in first place in the group.
Next games will be the first week of October.

So, US can clinch a trip to South Africa with a win at Honduras or a tie at Honduras and Costa Rica loss.

I am also a Hedjuk fan but I'm not sold on Adu. I am not saying he should not have a spot, but he needs to show more before establishing a consistent role.

Agreed regarding adu"srecent performance, but the guy is a game changer when playing with confidence. He needs to get on a team that will enable him to get quality minutes. The lack of PT is hurting him a lot more than altidore. He and altidore are the future for 2014. Or so it seems.

The US are pretty much a lock to get in. At this point I don't think they have to worry about that final playoff spot, which looks like the opponent is going to be Argentina.
Right now I think the NY Red Bulls could beat Argentina.
