View Full Version : Whiring with a new (6 weeks) laptop

It started "whiring" last night. It's on the left side. I'm not familiar with laptops. Could it be the fan? I'm still tethered to my modem and my mouse. I can feel it in my mouse.
I got it from Best Buy on line. I still have the invoice. I hate Best Buy. They are notorious for screwing a customer (I took my chances with a good price).
What says you?

It may be as simple as blowing some dust out of the fan with compressed air you can buy at Staples or the like. Worst case it's the fan dying but since your laptop is so new that's much less likely.
It's probably just dust.

sometimes the fan vents become blocked
or people keep laptops on areas where the computer gets overheated
do you use your laptop on the stove?
or do you leave it outside on the exterior part of an air conditioner?
these areas can generate heat and make the fan run constantly, creating whiring

I'm going with cat hair.
How can I fix this? I'd rather pull cat hair out of my comp for FREE than pay a Geek Squad guy who will be at a loss for finding porn.

Since I wouldn't advice opening anything up and that would be somewhat difficult anyway, your best bet is to get a can of compressed air from somewhere. Then turn your laptop off and blow a lot of air into the bottom and side vents, especially on the side you hear the noise on.
If that doesn't work it may be time to get a warranty repair, which could be a pain in the ass depending on your warranty conditions.

That's kind of along the lines of what I was thinking. It's under warranty. But don't contact Best Buy. Make sure you register it with the manufacturer (you still have time if you haven't done it yet). Then contact them and explain the problem. It may be something they can walk you through over the phone.

wrong site.
Like they said above, it's the fan. Blow it out yourself, if that doesn't work, you are still under warranty. I don't know Best Buy's warranty (if that's where you bought it), but if the store doesn't cove it, the manufacturer does.
