Do you want to commute to Manhattan from the other boroughs or from Jersey or are you making enough money to live in Manhattan?

Yeah ... you need to know this before we can help you. Each borough has it's disable places -and Jersey, well, it's close to NYC that's gotta count for something.

It all kinda averages out...
If you live in NYC, you don't need a car. If you live in NJ, you pretty much need a car and you will pay more for mass transit to get into NYC in general. And as you know, Snoogs, insurance on vehicles in NJ is rape.

Yeah, you're right. We should stop all this silly contempt for each other, or NY should just stop hating on NJ. It's all a wash in the end. To Jersey's credit, they do have WFMU.

The commute from Jersey is a fairly easy one if you don't mind the bus and train.
It's not really cheap in Jersey, but it's much better than Manhattan.
Drop me a line and I'll tell you which areas are cool and which ones to avoid.

You're just out of college and have a job in NYC so it screams Hoboken, NJ. Great town with lots of cool bars and places to eat...not to mention Maxwells and awesome views of the city. It's expensive to buy (cheaper of late), but rents have come WAY down and people are always looking for roommates.
Another option that is cool as shit is Boulevard East in Weehawken, NJ. Outstanding views and location just a $5 cab ride to the louder/crazier Hoboken, yet more laid back.
Oh and before I forget, EASY coummutes to the city (Weehawken or Hoboken) by bus, train, path, multiple ferries, car or just jog through the tunnel. Ok one of those is a bad idea, but the others are simple.
I moved out to Weehawken when moving here from PA and it was great. Spent some time in Hoboken as well. Both great, but if you make enough and then want to move to the city, these locations are great places to stage that move as you make more money.
PM me if you need more help.

Chelsea is on the West Side of Manhattan just north of the Village, I'd say bounded by 23rd and 14th Streets, and everything west of 7th Avenue.
Really expensive. Lots of rainbow flags.

You're in a for a serious reality check. Unless your parents are wealthy and willing to pay your rent, Chelsea is going to a neighborhood you visit not live in.

Don't be nervous about the subway. You can't get yourself in any real trouble down there, and it's easy enough to figure out.

The subways are the best way to get around, EXCEPT on the weekends. Keep in mind that almost all lines change on the weekend and lines you expect to run may not be running and often there is not adequate information about it. Check the MTA's website first before using the subway on the weekends.

On the weekends it's best to check the MTA's Twitter, or use hopstop (which is up to date on the screwy weekend schedule). You will wait a bit longer to get places on the weekend but generally this won't slow you down more then 15-20 minutes.

Yeah. That screams scam.
I'm assuming living in HI, you haven't seen the actual apartment? Did you send someone to actually check it out? Did send them any money??? There are a shitload of scams going on, especially with out of state renters who can't come see the apt, where they take your $$$ and you show up at an apartment that you can't move into.
Also, is that $500 with a roommate covering your own bedroom or would you be sharing a bedroom with someone?

I can get behind helping a guy by warning of potential scam, but you're turning the ship a bit too quickly here. Your post was about the size an apt for $500 - not about it being a scam. You're changing gears here.

Apt for $500 anywhere on the island of Manhattan obtained from Craigslist is a gigantic red flag... unless it is, indeed, a tiny closet in Spanish Harlem. You live in Brooklyn, you should be aware of that, no?

Well, while there may be cause for alarm, I know quite a few people who rent rooms for about $500, sometime less, in Brooklyn. It depends on the neighborhood and the number of roommates. That wasn't the point I was making anyway. Read posts 63, 68 and 70 - to follow my story here.

Right now it's in the mid 50's and will go down to the 30's overnight. It is a bit colder than normal. During the winter you will most likely be sweating in your apartment (I don't think I have ever seen an apartment with a thermostat, once the heat is on it is on) so dressing in layers is recommended.
