That says it all!
Don't get me started on the attocities of the Soviet regime.
Stalin was an asshole-- he salted the Ukrainians' fields so they'd starve.
I just don't get how people call Obama a Nazi AND a communist. Oh, and a socialist hippy. MAKE UP YOUR MIND!!!
PS-- it just shows you have an open mind and curious about world politics.

I lol'd.
I actually have a very open mind to things. I kind of run with the hardcore right things sometimes because it provides more dialogue and people write really long posts that fill me with even more knowledge. And I don't like all the things that the president has donw. I don't like the government getting bigger. But, I don't think Obama is a nazi or a communist. He just believes in different things. Whatever. In 4 years if he really fucks up he won't be elected again. Ya know, unless he tampers with votes, but I don't think that could happen...

THIS is the ONLY place my Soviet Studies major plays a role in my life.
Socialism is one thing. Most western-European countries are socialist in some way.
COMMUNISM is GREAT on paper, but not so good when it comes to human nature. I know it all started in Eastern Europe but it failed. White people are lazy. Or lazier than most. Or the hard workers were smart enough to get out before the borders closed.
BUT when you add the Asian work ethic-- BINGO!! It worked for China, in a way. Granted they keep Shanghai "western" and capitalist so China can make money (please correct me if I'm wrong).
Communism is working WONDERS for North Korea. Oh-- and Cuba. An island.
Slavs were WAYYYYY TOO JADED to really believe in Communism. Maybe some douch bag kids wanted to find a place in the regime. But even the regime enjoyed the the perks of the west.
HBox-- you're SUCH a political tease!!! Keep your feet on the ground and keep reaching for the stars!

I wouldn't say I flirted with it but was made to study Marx & Lenin from 1-4th grade... it doesn't make you a bad person, studying it does not mean that you 100% agree with it. Good for you for widening your horizons and not just talk out your ass when discussing political subjects in other threads.

Tis a truly sad day.
Keep reading Keithy!
Read Mein Kampf and see how stupid it is. Read Wealth of Nations. Read Jon Nichols/Robert McChesney. Read Ayn Rand. Read Saul Alinsky.
Grab every perspective you can, then you can judge them for yourself and develop a perspective that is yours and yours alone.

Communism was probably intended by nature to be at best practiced individually by small isolated villages or settlements, rather than have one particular communism control a monstrously huge geographic area.
Gets hard to keep your community and everyone in it in mind when said community's population exceeds 50,000. Impossible to achieve once you hit the sixth digit.
Thus things like Soviet Russia were not honest applications of Communism in the Karl Marx-intended sense. It was just something to make a political machine different from everyone else and thereby state its superiority by reason of its differences with other powers.
That's my pedestrian opinion.
I'll say one thing about the Communist Manifesto: It's a little preachy. Gotta admit.

I went to the book store and picked up Mein Kampf. I read some of it and then put it down and left the store. It's so awful. In everyway.
I've read some Nietzsche. I purposely bought 'Anti-Christ' since I was raised christian.
I'm currently reading Ayn Rand's 'Atlas Shrugged'.

i understand the appeal of her ideas. However she is the worst writer I have ever read in my life, Atlas Shrugged in particular. I was a quarter of the way through and could not believe there was that many pages left. But at least she filled it with some of the most tedious writing and dialog I have ever read.
If there was a book that encapsulated my feelings so well and was written like that garbage I'd be seriously pissed.

I agree with her on many points. But I agree that it's going to be a slow read. Especially factoring in I'm reading Beowulf and Wutherington Heights for my poetry, and British Lit class.

True communism could work in a country of 20 people.Any more than that someone would fuck up the system.
