Disney to buy comic book powerhouse Marvel for $4B

Under the deal, Disney will acquire ownership of 5,000 Marvel characters. Many of them, including the Fantastic Four and the X-Men, were co-created by the comic book legend Stan Lee.

Holy shit.

I have mixed thoughts on this one. I don't think I like Marvel being owned by a huge media conglomerate. It doesn't seem to have helped DC that much.

But wow, a huge thing.

I prey that the Punisher blows Mickey Away....I just hope they don't force the Disney image..that would kill the comics.

I'm just going to start silently praying that Pixar decides to try its hand at one of Marvel's properties.

Eh, it will never happen.

They are not going to have the acquisition finalized by then. Plus, then you have to add in time to write, draw and publish the comic. I'd say closer to a year and six months.

Why? You don't want a playable Mickey in UA2?

Looks like the deal with Universal for the Marvel Theme Park at Universal Studios will not run up by this merger, it will continue along. That and they will not be messing the current movie and video game deals in place with Publishers/Movie Companies........yet. We'll see. Would like to see some Pixar-made marvel comic movies.

UPDATE #2: John Lasseter met with Marvel last week about a possible team-up between Marvel and Pixar and got "pretty excited, pretty fast." They say there's definitely an opportunity there.

If it's a Pixar type deal, where it's hands off editiorial and they cget a cut of merchandising and theme parks, it might be ok.

Or they could just have Universal pay Disney the Licensing rights to keep the characters. So pretty much Disney would have some sort of hand in the entire Florida theme park market.

Either way don't care. They just better not fuck up the comics. They are the top seller and just leave it alone. Have to wait and see.

Wonder if Minnie-Mouse will get big giant boobies and nice round ass, like every X-Men chick.

They would make more money off of Marvel rides in their parks than receiving license fees for rides in other parks.

After watching the news late last night, Disney said they want to use the characters in their parks. So I guess they will pull the characters from Islands of Adventure. They will market the characters and use the movies to make a ton of money. I just hope Disney does not fall into money problems like they did back in the late 80's or was that early 90's.

Did DC comics change once Time Warner took them over? Just curious. I really don't think they will mess with the comic lines. They make money and like I said before, they are the top sellers. Maybe they will make it better...bring the price down. It is crazy that a comic cost $3.99. How the hell do kids afford to buy them? But most likely they will not.

Just have to wait and see.

One of the things Disney gets out of this deal is to attract more interest from boys. As a father of two girls, I can say that, between the Disney Princesses and Hannah Montana, etc., they have captured a huge market for girls. My eldest get a lot of "Princess" stuff, from movies, books, and toys.

But they really don't have much to attract boys. Sure, they have some Pixar movie stuff that boys like (Cars, Incredibles), but it's not as easily defined as "Princesses." With Marvel, they have popular super-heroes that they can grab boys interests. They are going to push this in their Disney stores, parks, television channel, etc.

And now, I will look forward to brining my daughter to the Disney store.

A few years ago, Pixar severed ties with Disney then came back with the offer of preferred stock and a ton of money.

A little bit later, Marvel sued Disney for overpacking their newly-adopted ABC Family Marvel cartoon library on their channels. Now, Disney buys Marvel out.

Okay, this may sound insane, but I think ronfez.net should threaten Disney with legal action, then Mikeyboy can cashout on mad Disney money.

There was a great article in a business magazine I read months ago about how Disney had cornered the girls market, but couldn't get boys at all. They rebranded one of the channels to "XD" to try and capture the boys, but it just felt like they didn't get it. They hired an agency to analyze how boys act, but it just felt like they were overthinking everything.

I recall one thing from the article that always rang stupid to me. It was about boys carrying skateboards with the wheels facing away from them to show off the artwork, but my first thought was "and it has nothing to do with the wheels banging into you and hurting while you walk if they are facing you?"

I thought of that too, but in their cases they didn't mention boys carrying them by the wheels, so I figured they didn't know and didn't see the boys do it.

No, the article went in depth on their research of questionnaires, observations, etc., but sometimes when you try too hard to be hip, you just overshoot and land on the other side of the mountain.

I was having lunch with one of my best friends who works at the law firm I used to work at, and he told me that the firm was involved on the Disney/Marvel merger. His job was to review the various litigations against Marvel for due diligence purposes. He told me that he spoke to Stan Lee, Steve Ditko and a bunch of others.

I think if the merger had happened four years ago, I would have been the one working on the deal. I also gave him crap because he knows me very well, and we talk every week for business, and he didn't tell me until yesterday.
