View Full Version : Has Anyone Eaten Limburger Cheese?

So, today, doing some grocery shopping, I was perusing the cheese case. And there were a few packages of Limburger cheese there, and for some bizarre reason, I felt compelled to sniff it. And it absolutely smelled like shit. Just dreadful.

Which led me to wonder: has anyone here actually tried this shit? I can't imagine that eating it would be pleasant, since the way food smells has as much of an impact on how we enjoy our food as the actual taste. And I can't imagine that it tastes good enough to override that ghastly smell.

So I ask you all: have any of you had the courage (or been dumb enough) to actually try this stuff? If so, how are you supposed to eat it?

I had some kind of Limburger spread once, but it wasn't the least bit strong. I've always wanted to try it. I've never met a cheese I didn't like.

actually answer the original question, Yes, I have eaten it and it tasted terrible.

My sons saw Limburger cheese mentioned in a 3 Stooges short and asked if it really was bad smelling. I said that I had never tried it so I couldn't say for sure. The next time we went to the grocery store the pestered me to buys some. They wouldn't eat any so I was the lucky one to break off a minuscule piece and eat it.

Yuck. Needless to say, the rest of that cheese was thrown away before it could turn green (or stink up the fridge)

Seriously disgusting.

Do any of you know how cheese is actually made?

If you do and you still eat it you're just this side of insane.

Last time I had it was in Germany at the Rhine Wine Fest and can't call it a favorite. I also think blue cheese sucks ass, otherwise I love cheese of all types except processed cheese shit like the singles sold in this country.

Yes... actually, I have eaten it. I've also worked at a cheese factory that made it, but that was 35 years ago. It does not smell when you are making it - it does not smell when you cut and dry salt it - it does not smell when you re-salt it (five more times... once each side) but heaven help the poor staffer who did not 'cut the cheese' and I am not being funny here - into perfect 2 inch cubes. The wax paper and foil wrapping machine is automated, and if the cheese is anything other than a perfect 2 inch cube - it crushes inside the machine.... which uses hot paddles to seal up the wax and foil - and when that happens there is no hiding place where the packaging worker will not find you. Probably because they are motivated. Limburger STINKS. It stinks even more when it is in contact with the heated paddles of the wrapping machine. It smells like a cow with a retained placenta that is rotting. But it also tastes wonderful - in a way that someone might describe a very rich brie or camambert. When you unwrap limburger you wash it first - pat it dry - then you cut open the 'crust' or 'skin' to reveal the creamy inside. That is what you put on your cracker or bread. It will be slightly softer than brie - and much stronger in taste. The smell is in the slimy exterior.... washing the cheese first... removes that.

I can't figure out if these knockoff scam companies have actual humans trolling this shit up, or if they have the smartest AI program known to man. Either way, they're dumb as shit for bumping years old threads with inanity.

My girl just came home from Trader Joe's with a DREADFUL smelling Brie. The dairy guy said "You need to keep it in its own drawer". I am not excited about tasting this tonight.
