OK, so I went Mac this summer (though I am posting on my ol' HP at he moment) and I have a guy at work telling me to download Snow Leopard this weekend.

I am amazed by the price ... but do I need to upgrade?

I'd love to hear the pros and cons from this crew.

And I just found this article from David Pogue from the NY Times: Snow Leopard (http://www.nytimes.com/2009/08/27/technology/personaltech/27pogue.html?_r=1).

I purchased it yesterday at best buy $25 on sale and $5 reward zone coupon = $20 not a a bad deal. They updated Quicktime, Safari and now mail supports exchange servers. My 3 year old MacBook Pro runs better with Snow Leopard then with the previous versions of OSX.Before the upgrade everything would freeze or crash a few times each day. I would pick it up for cheap price alone and if you got recently got your Mac i think they are offering upgrades for only $10.

10.4 is really horrible compared to .5, and leopard has a lot of re-written code so its sort of an obvious upgrade...

But if you don't already have leopard I don't think you're gonna get it for the 29 advertised.

I'm pretty sure if you don't have leopard you can just buy Snow Leopard for the 30 advertised price. All i did was walk into the store pick up the box and paid for it.

Shhh...don't tell anyone...

...the $29 upgrade disk works just as well on a computer runnign 10.4. It doesn't check for a previous version.

I'm digging Snow Leopard. My macs seem to be running a bit faster, recovered 12 gigs of disk space, and digging the scrolling stacks.

Hey, can this be downloaded or do you need to order the physical disc?

Just ordered mine. They didn't give me the option of downloading directly. Being sent by mail.

I'm not a Mac guy but I was listening to the Leo Laporte show on Saturday and he said that it was no different from the original except you can make your icons larger.Instead of paying the 30 bucks he recommended just doing the upgrade.

Well, the thing about Snow Leopard is that the biggest new parts of it aren't really going to be implemented yet -- Open CL and Grand Central. Both of those things need software designed for them.

Dumb question:

I'm using Numbers from Apple's iWork package and I am trying to cut and paste cells that contain a function that points to other cells. Say I paste the cell up 2 rows and over 3 columns, now the function points at cells up 2 rows and over 3 columns from where it should. Microsoft Excel used to fix this automatically. I'm sure it is an easy fix but I am just too lazy. Thanks.

Nevermind I figured it out. You actually drag the cells to their new home using the little hand icon. Fancy. I LOVE MY NEW iMAC!

So I went and bought Snow Leopard for my iMac G5 and put the disk in and right away get a message that I can't install Snow Leopard on it because its not Intel based. What the fuck does that mean? Why can't I upgrade my OS? Did I just lose my money?

The G5 used the previous generation processor, before Apple switched to using Intel chips.

They should refund your money, but the upgrade clearly states it is for Intel only Macs.

Good luck.

I honestly never even knew what kind of processor I had. Now, am I at any disadvantage to not have Snow Leopard? I have a new Mackbbok Pro and I put the Snow Leopard on that, but I bought the family pack, thinking I would be able to update more than one comp. I guess I can let my niece use the other copies on the disk. Right?

Prior to using Intel processors and Asus boards Mac used a Motorolla processor. You would have to buy a new Mac to take advantage of the newer OSs. And yes you can pass the software onto your niece.

How about this (long shot), can I install this on a PC? I have a Sony Vaio that's acting funny.. Would that work?

Not without a hack. The BIOS on a Mac and on a PC are written different which OSX has to detect the Mac BIOS before loading or starting up. There is a way to do it if you are tech savvy.

Damn, it would have been so amazing if I popped that disk into my Vaio and it installed on my pc. Why can't life ever be like that? Seriously, my Vaio is acting really funny and I wish I knew how to wipe it clean and start new.

should be able to

i like the new stacks & i'm really happy with the new quicktime. i haven't used safari in forever though since gvac told me about camino.

the biggest bonus i had was that i was finally able to get rid of the old hacked microsoft office i had & install the legit one my sister bought after i changed to snow leopard. office had infiltrated my computer & couldn't get rid of it no matter how hard i tried. but i tried one final time to delete it then installed the new OS & it worked! old hacked version was gone & the new legit version is installed & i can finally get the updates.

if you have tiger its a $169 upgrade to snow leopard

only works with intel so it has to be post 2006

good thing is it comes with iLife which the $30 version does not.
