Ok...I need to settle something...
In the movie 'American Beauty' a lot of people claim that the father was gay. I personally think that he was pissed because he thought his son was gay and that is why he killed Lester (Kevin Spacey)...am I right?

he was a homophobe because of repressed homosexuality. a cut scene from the movie had him having gay sex in the army.

Ikea, I don't get it. Why would they cut such a big part of the movie??

They cut out two big parts of the movie. That was one of them, the other was Thora Birch/Wes Bently being arrested and convicted for the murder of Kevin Spacey.
The latter cut was because they felt it changed the meaning of the movie too much and I understand it.
The first cut, I forgot why they cut it but they had a reason.
I thought the movie was totally overrated.

Did not get to see the uncut version. It looked like he was having a major struggle between his macho/military background and an attraction toward men. He had to be extra severe with the discipline of his son to make up for his own insecurities. Judging from the cut version, I believed he never followed through on his feelings before attempting to kiss Kevin.
It sounds like from what Ikea saw in the uncut, he did follow through at an earlier time in his life... Obviously this blows my theory away...

even with those missing scenes (which i didn't know about until just now), i always thought that the father was gay. as a tough army guy, he was repressing his homosexuality and coming off as homophobic and all. but, when he was rejected, he killed lester

You were watching that on Cinemax tonight werent you Mira?? I was watching that too and was telling someone that the father was gay. He was angry towards gays cause he refused to acknowledge the facts that he was gay himself. That was part of the reason the mother is so shot...he expects an inordinary amount from her and takes his anger out on her. A person of a sexuality (and sex) that he does no desire...so yes that is the reason why he killed Kevin Spacey

they cut scene isn't available. I read it in Entertainment Weekly and it was filmed by the director, Sam Mendes, removed it. It's available online in the original script which is here <a href="http://scifiscripts.name2host.com/msol/A_B.html">American Beauty Script</a>

I believe that's her being scared that her husband was dead but on a deeper level it was her running to the only solace she knows- material goods.

I can see how you see the father being gay but my first impression of the movie was that he thought his son gay and was really pissed and upset because he thought he raised a good boy....

The real question Mira is was he mad cause he thought his son was gay?? Or was he mad cause he was mad, cause he thought his son was enjoying a life that he wanted?? That being the life of a gay man...

The father was upset because his son was gay and could enjoy a lifestyle that he never could for various reasons. The bottom line is he was gay.

I was under the impression, even after seeing the deleted scenes, that the father was repressed homosexual, and in thinking that his son was gay, he saw it as a weakness, and he was taught to not be weak and to repress his homosexual feelings for the cause of the military.

Question while we're on this topic...
If a man is married, has children, and is attracted to men but never gets to complete a sexual act with another man, Do you feel he is gay?
If I'm getting off the topic track, let me know!

As I mentioned earlier, I think the father was a repressed homosexual and because he couldn't live life as he wanted to he turned all his feelings towards agression so he decided to hate gay people because he was taught to.
If a man is married, has children, and is attracted to men but never gets to complete a sexual act with another man, Do you feel he is gay?Yes, at the very least bi

Yeah, I think the guy would be considered bisexual. Everyone has different tendencies....I don't think it should put you in a specific catergory.

depends. if a man is attracted to other men, and not women, he is gay. if he is attracted to both, bi. damn, i sound like a textbook. the point is, it doesn't matter whether or not the person acts on the inpulses. it's all in the feelings themselves. if a man wants to do another man, you have your answer

Yes, the father was gay and hated himself for being gay. He killed Lester not because Lester turned him down, but because Lester knew his secret.

I agree with Alice, since Lester found out he did not want his secret to be out.
I thought it was a waste of film. I can not believe it got all of the awards that it did. Kevin Spacey did a great job. I wanted to slap Annette Benning what a bitch.
The sixth sense was a hell of a lot better than American Beauty.

Although I agree, I have to say that comparing American Beauty with The Sixth Sense is like comparing apples and oranges.
Both had their own merits.

There's no special edition DVD, but there should be one coming soon.
The movie originally opened with Thora and Wes on trial for killing her father. The tape in the beginning of the movie was supposed to be evidence in the case, but as Ikea said, it changed the movie's meaning.

I thought it was a waste of film. I can not believe it got all of the awards that it did. Kevin Spacey did a great job.
The movie was an essay about the dysfunctions of suburban societies today. It shows that despite being in a good profession and making lots of money, happiness comes from within...Lester was, in a twisted sense, an Anti-Hero. He was someone the we loved to watch on screen, but someone that many people could not be. He represented a quality of taking risks and finding happiness in a world that frowns on both. Fitz (the gay father) had to kill Lester cause of the idea of taking risks and making himself happy...When he is beating up his son for showing Thora Birch the plate he says "there are rules son. You just cant do anything that you feel like." Fitz was a representative of "the straight and narrow path" while Lester represented what happens when you take risks in life. When you put your happiness and well being above the material life...That is why Lester was killed. So that he would not bend from the rules of society, or really make anyone else realize that society should be flexible...

I'll have to agree with the repressed homosexual theory. I didn't know about the cut scenes. As I saw it, he kissed Spacey it try to better understand what he thought his son was going through.
