Ok, I need to reformat 2 computers.

Both of them I bought off of ebay and fixed, how do I go about doing this?

I have an xp home I use for my desktop, but dont think I can use that.

In the past I have installed 2000pro on many machines, however I would rather have XP on these machines.

1. Can I use my xp home disk then simply pay for a license when I call microsoft to activate? If so how much do they charge?

2. Can I simply but a new copy of XP, and use it on both computers, and fuck microsoft, or will it catch up to me?

3. Both of the laptops have XP tags on the bottom, does this matter as far as licensing?

I wouldn't pirate Windows if I were you.

Because that would be wrong. I never touch all those working copies of XP and Vista on torrent sites.

Never.

You'd have to purchase the software because what is on the machines now are likely OEM which MS will not support.

I also agree with Moe on OS pirating, it is really hit and miss.

Just give them a number from an old computer or disc you bought, talk to some guy from india and he'll make you promise him you uninstalled it on your other computer, and this is the new computer you'll be using it on.

As far as I'm concerned, if you bought it once, it's yours to do with what you want with it, as long as you keep it on one computer.

They want you to buy a whole new OS even if you threw your old comp in the trash.

It's BS

what would they charge me to license it on a new computer?

It's a pain in the ass, and you may end up saving yourself time and annoyance by going out and picking up two copies of windows xp. I'm not sure about a transfer of ownership on xp licenses, but from transferring licenses on other software before it is really annoying and a pain in the ass. It normally involves the original owner contacting the software company, issuing a transfer of ownership to the new owner, etc.

Your best bet: Buy two copies of Windows XP - 1 PC License OR Buy one copy of Windows XP and contact Microsoft Licensing and purchase additional licenses under that one copy. Not sure the price OR if they are even doing that for XP anymore. They are pushing Windows 7 now.

First, what is the brand of laptop? Dell for example(and I believe HP) has a function where you can restore it to its initial condition which would give you not only the OS but save you time searching for Drivers. That most likely is the best way.

if the XP tags are on the bottom, you may be able to reformat/reinstall using those XP tags AS LONG AS ITS THE SAME VERSION.
(ie - home to home or Pro to Pro).

having said all of that I generally follow the same policy as Moe.

I would never find a version of XP that already has sp3 slipstreamed in and use that along with a program that insures it would be listed as genuine.
that would be wrong.

I would never buy copies of software from unless they were legit - and if they are for Dell, they are OEM and not legit.

You can legitimately sell OEM copies if you include a computer component like a cable or something. It's been a long standing loophole for years. I've bought many copies of XP with no problem at all.

sell, or re-sell?

also, you would need to be careful with Dell discs - I've installed with dell OEM discs that looked in the bios to see if it was a Dell machine. (not all do that though)

Sell or re-sell. I don't know about the Dell thing, but he's sold a shit load of them, and has perfect feedback. I even read the actual feedback messages and they all sounded happy. I found this guy because I bought a Dell disk from him without the COA for a Dell laptop I'm fixing. The price is very low, though. I've never paid less than $100 in the past. But like I said, I've never had a problem. I've even gotten support from Microsoft for them.

Just bought a dell disk for $11 on ebay, so that should work being that my laptops are dell brand.

should work out.

If not, there are other ways to fix it allegedly.
