I'm currently taking courses for some computer certs (CCNA, MCSE, LINUX +). My major interest in IT is the cisco side of networking and linux. when looking for jobs involving linux there never seems to be any entry level type linux jobs. only lead admin or sr. admin. How does someone attain the linux experience to attain these jobs. I know some of you on rf.net are in the industry. any advice would be highly appreciated.

thanx in advance

This is not concrete but I spoke with a buddy of mine from my forum who said he started by contributing to a particular Linux OS project, was able to put that on a resume, and got his foot in the door for a software development company. He's now been with that company a couple years, they pay decent, and he is overall happy with his job.

I'd recommend applying for one.

Perhaps even more than one.

Perhaps even more than one.

Let's not get too overzealous.

If you're still taking classes, have you considered interning? If you can get by for a few months of nonpaying work, you can get your foot in the door.

the unfortunate part of me attempting to change professions at 31 is interning is not a option. I dont make alot of money but at worst I can maybe get by with a 10-15k pay cut, which I am totally aware of since I'm gonna change careers(although I have some networking experience). Finding an entry level networking job isn't really my concern as there there are plenty for me to apply to. It just seems that there really aren't anything entry level involving Linux which is why I was curious how you get into it.

Your profile doesn't say where you are, but if you're in NY, SF, LA, then go to tech meetups, network with people, find Jr SysAdmin openings and go for them. If you meet the right people, they'll offer you spots or point you to people who will.
