is it worth it to buy a referbished mac?
my friend's g4 just shit the bed and it's at a bad time, he can't really afford a new mac. but the referbs aren't that much cheaper. has anyone bought a used mac before and if so, what's a good place to get one?

I'd check otu the usual place -- Craigslist, Ebay, wherever. But, honestly, even used Macs aren't all that much cheaper than new ones, unless they're old.
One thing I'd do is get the Mac's serial number and enter it here:
https://selfsolve.apple.com/GetWarranty.do
to see if there's any warranty left on it. If the former owner got Apple Care, I'd ask if they'll let it go over with the computer (they have a right to call and get a refund for the unused portion). If it's still in the normal warranty, you can still buy it on that computer.
But I'd really look at refurbs. I've seen quite a few of the aluminum Macbooks showing up there, as people return them for a new Macbook Pro, or discover that Apple, for some damn reason or another, dumped FireWire on that model.

I had a friend who bought a used apple laptop from Craigslist. It all worked out for her but I would be afraid to take the risk on something so expensive. If you can find one refurbished from Apple, that might be worth it, but like you said probably not that much cheaper.

I'd probably feel more comfortable with the purchase if the seller knew how to spell refurbished.

A good refurbishing is only as good as the original furbishing. The last thing you want is something that has been furbished shoddily.

I saved quite a bit on the used iMac G5 I have. I got it on eBay and never had a bit of trouble. I paid like $900 for it. The guy was very nice and walked me through a lot and it was clean as a whistle. Gvac helped me too.

I check craigslist, especially in a college town cause rthe graphics departments are constantly selling their old comps online.
Apples refurbs are as good as new.
Its weird but every mac I've ever owned since 1995 is still running.

Buying a refurb from Apple is not bad at all.
They do a good job, but I still bought mine new.
A friend of mine bought a refurb and it worked out really well for her.
