Old sitcoms are released all the time on DVD.
Some of them are funny and endearing,
most are unwatchable.
What sitcom was a hit in its time, but looking back is actually total crap?
I pick 'Growing Pains'
Terrible, terrible show

it should really be a show that you thought you liked at the time, but now, when you look back, you wonder why

I won't say all of it, but a good portion of the first few seasons of Seinfeld are nearly unwatchable.

I'll go with The Cosby Show here. I remember watching it every week when I was 12 or so. I saw an episode a little while back and was just bored stupid.

The post-Henry Blake/Trapper John MASH episodes got a lot more preachy and a lot less funny.

Happy Days. Now I'm just distracted by people having '70s & '80s hairstyles in the 1950s.

Friends. Maybe it was the cultural differences but that shit was the least funniest thing on TV.
ABC from 1980-1997
Oh Lleeder, how you make us laugh.

Fuck. I don't care if it's the makeup and lighting. I don't care that she is probably a really nasty bitch in real life. But Tiffany Thiessen is fucking hot as hell.

Gosh, many of you picked the ones I was thinking of but I am going to have to agree with Friends. I wont lie, I liked it the first few seasons. But I do watch repeats now, and I see that it is total crap and I don't know why I liked it.
And someone mentioned Seinfeld's first few seasons. I wont say that it is unwatchable, but it doesn't have the same speed and tempo as say later episodes. I dont laugh as much at the earlier ones, but I still find them funny.
My nominee for worst 'best' sitcom would go to Mr. Belvedere. Sure it wasnt exactly a super hit with the critics, but I remember loving the show. Now I see some old episodes via Youtube or Hulu and I cringe. They are not funny at all. Just that schtick from the 1980's.
The thing that always pissed me off with Growing Pains was how they had the daughter at the end of one season, and the following season she was like 6 years old. Was she a mutant child who grew overnight like a pod person??

South Central. It was on for approximately one season, and it was a shitass show that I watched every episode of. I guess it was a sitcom because it had a laughtrack? Oh and the one with Sinbad around that time too.

I love this sitcom. I think it's cause it is based on the town I am from on Long Island.

Don't you mean Three Mile Island?

See also "Family Ties". They did the same thing with Andy.

The Simpsons has become unwatchable.
Yea but it used to be great and I still laugh at the old episodes
I pick Home Improvement
Perfect Strangers
Night Court
Two gems that I loved when I was little, but now...
Not so much.
I'm going to agree with you on both of these, but I will defend both of them a bit.
The humor of "Perfect Strangers" was simple and safe, but every once in a while they had a funny episode. I think Mark Linn-Baker and Bronson Pinchot would be a fantastic if they worked blue.
"Night Court" suffered from the weak acting ability of Harry Anderson and Markie Post. John Larroquette was a riot.
I am going to add "Differ'nt Strokes" and "Just the 10 of Us." To be fair, I only watched "Just the Ten of US" for the three cute older sisters.
Most of these shows I thought were utter crap at the time, but it's more than likely a generational thing because I have to geez it up with AJ about "Happy Days" - a show I LOVED so much as a kid, and one that (with maybe the exception of that first season) is just a piece of shit.
On the flip side, I would nominate MARRIED WITH CHILDREN as the Best Worst Sitcom.
