Ok so I have a question for you computer peeps.

A couple years ago I bought an ipod and I was living with other people and we all shared a computer. I downloaded a crap ton of music from that computer that I don't actually own on cd. All that music was not purchased on itunes, it was just us downloading our cd's on itunes and then downloading on our ipods. I have a feeling that my ipod is about to shit the bed pretty soon and I'm sad cuz I'm going to loose all this great music and I can't just buy another ipod and download the music again cuz the computer is in Arizona and I"m in NC.

My question is: can I download the music I have on my ipod now to my laptop?

OR

is there a way for one of my friends who still has access to that computer in AZ to download it on some kind of card of some sort and then mail it to me so that I can download the music on my laptop then?

Thanks in advance!

Annie

Can you tell me which iPod and what OS you have? I'll find instructions based on that.

You can use a program called "Senuti" - iTunes backwards, to get the music I
on you laptop. When you do, however, iTunes is going to determine if your an authorized user for the files. I don't know how to get around that.

Actually I meant yours. Are you using a PC if so XP or Vista? If you are using a Mac then the instructions are slightly different.

You have to enable the options to show invisible files. The OS you have determines how you do this.

You also have to put your iPod in disk mode.

Instructions here (http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1363)

From there you navigate to iPod_Control/Music and your music will be there but I doubt it will be named. It most likely will be some alphanumeric designation iTunes gave it, which will be a real pain in the ass. Once you get to the point where you can see them then you can save them to your computer.

If you want to go further and save them directly into iTunes and have them labeled then use this.

It is free for the trial period, which should be forever. It will just annoy you by asking you to visit the site and donate every time you open it.

I used an app called iRepo (http://www.purpleghost.com/index.php?q=irepo) and it did a great job of restoring my playlists when my itune library disappeared recently. It can also restore the actual songs to a PC ( i didn't have to since only the library was lost, the songs were all still on my hard drive). It has a free trial period and a very simple interface. As other posters have indicated you do need to set your iPod up for disk access but that's a simple enough procedure.

I wish I was more familiar with the iPod but my gf has a Nano. I used my Win 7 os that does not have iTunes installed and made the Nano look like an external HD. I was then able to back her music up to my network HD and could play the files in VLC.
