Another movie based on a comic book, about real life teenagers fighting crime. It's getting a lot of great buzz and Lionsgate just picked it up to release next year.
It's being hailed as ultra-violent and controversial.
If the standing ovation Millar's fans gave is any indication, folks who liked Kick-Ass the book will probably enjoy the movie. But even if the Kick-Ass comic wasn't your thing, the adaptation may still be worth a gander, provided you can accept the basic premise that a kid from our world wakes up one morning and decides to be a superhero. Vaughn's additions, and casting choices like Clark Duke as one of Dave's foul-mouthed friends, make the Kick-Ass footage funnier and more visually interesting than the corresponding scenes from the source material. And Vaughn's movie has more affection for the superhero genre itself, while still demonstrating how unhinged people would have to be to try it out for themselves.
You can see four clips of the movie here:

And I'll give it this much: that one clip had Nic Cage making me laugh for the first time in a long, long time.

Interesting choice making a movie out of a comic series that takes what feels like a bajillion years just to get 6 fucking issues released.
Will it be as fucked up and entertaining as the series or are we looking at another Wanted-retardation (THE LOOOOOOOOOMMMMMMMMM OF DOOOOOOOOOOMMMMMMMMMMMMM)?

Foul language isn't funny and action violence isn't exciting just because both are being incorporated into a narrative by kids. Wow, a little girl saying 'cunt,' the wheel of black humor has been reinvented! I really hope the story here is strong enough to sustain or overcome what I'm perceiving as gimmickry run amok. One of my biggest pet peeves in movies is when I'm forced to accept the surface value coolness of kids saying or doing outrageous, adult-associated things just for a cheap, "Oh no they didn't!" shock factor. Superhero movies were already lame enough without the formula wrinkle of villains being physically overpowered by sassy kids. I can't trust any Kick-Ass reaction I encounter online when it opens, because a lot of people out there seemingly made up their minds way in advance that they're going to go bananas over it. I hope I'm wrong, because I'd rather geek out over a movie than be annoyed by it, but I have a suspicion a lot of the orgasmic praise from the early screenings has more to do with people in this age of marketing saturation watching it with no expectations or preconceived notions.

Shall I have feelings, or should I pretend to be cool? Will I seem hopelessly square if I find “Kick-Ass” morally reprehensible and will I appear to have missed the point? Let's say you're a big fan of the original comic book, and you think the movie does it justice. You know what? You inhabit a world I am so very not interested in. A movie camera makes a record of whatever is placed in front of it, and in this case, it shows deadly carnage dished out by an 11-year-old girl, after which an adult man brutally hammers her to within an inch of her life. Blood everywhere. Now tell me all about the context.
The movie's premise is that ordinary people, including a high school kid, the 11-year-old and her father, try to become superheroes in order to punish evil men. The flaw in this premise is that the little girl does become a superhero. In one scene, she faces a hallway jammed with heavily armed gangsters and shoots, stabs and kicks them all to death, while flying through the air with such power, it's enough to make Jackie Chan take out an AARP membership.
This isn't comic violence. These men, and many others in the film, are really stone-cold dead. And the 11-year-old apparently experiences no emotions about this. Many children that age would be, I dunno, affected somehow, don't you think, after killing eight or 12 men who were trying to kill her?
I know, I know. This is a satire. But a satire of what? The movie's rated R, which means in this case that it's doubly attractive to anyone under 17. I'm not too worried about 16-year-olds here. I'm thinking of 6-year-olds. There are characters here with walls covered in carefully mounted firearms, ranging from handguns through automatic weapons to bazookas. At the end, when the villain deliciously anticipates blowing a bullet hole in the child's head, he is prevented only because her friend, in the nick of time, shoots him with bazooka shell at 10-foot range and blows him through a skyscraper window and across several city blocks of sky in a projectile of blood, flame and smoke. As I often read on the Internet: Hahahahaha.
The little girl is named Mindy (Chloe Grace Moretz). She adopts the persona of Hit Girl. She has been trained by her father, Big Daddy (Nicolas Cage), to join him in the battle against a crime boss (Mark Strong). Her training includes being shot at point-blank range while wearing a bulletproof vest. She also masters the martial arts — more, I would say, than any other movie martial artist of any age I can recall. She's gifted with deadly knife-throwing; a foot-long knife was presented to her by Dad as, I guess, a graduation present.
Big Daddy and Mindy never have a chat about, you know, stuff like how when you kill people, they are really dead. This movie regards human beings like video-game targets. Kill one, and you score. They're dead, you win. When kids in the age range of this movie's home video audience are shooting one another every day in America, that kind of stops being funny.
Hit Girl teams up with Kick-Ass (Aaron Johnson), the film's narrator, a lackluster high school kid who lives vicariously through comic books. For reasons tedious to explain, he orders a masked costume by mail order and sets about trying to behave as a superhero, which doesn't work out well. He lacks the training of a Big Daddy. But as he and Hit Girl find themselves fighting side by side, he turns into a quick learner. Also, you don't need to be great at hand-to-hand combat if you can just shoot people dead.
The early scenes give promise of an entirely different comedy. Aaron Johnson has a certain anti-charm, his problems in high school are engaging, and so on. A little later, I reflected that possibly only Nic Cage could seem to shoot a small girl point-blank and make it, well, funny. Say what you will about her character, but Chloe Grace Moretz has presence and appeal. Then the movie moved into dark, dark territory, and I grew sad.

Ebert can exhibit a strange moralistic/puritanical streak with some movies that I think overwhelms his better judgment about it. Seek out his review of "Blue Velvet" for a prime example.

Ebert seems to find at least one movie a year to be one that he ends up having a kind of overly moralistic crusade against, like he views it as causing social ills and only he can stand up to it and save us all.

The entertainment industry always seeks to draw in previously un catered to segments, and this movie will attract a certain type of person. If his issue is the young girl with the filthy mouth and strong sexual references she makes, it is probably because he dies not to accept that such a segment exists, and they certainly do.

Saw the movie last night. I was sort of disappointed. I read the comic and thought it was a good comic. They chanced a lot of the movie from the comic. I guess they had to but some of it I just don't see why. The action was good and I liked that they kept things bloody and violent. The beginning of the movie was better then the ending. Liked the way they had Kick Ass start up and build up. Did not like the ending...it was too comic bookish.
Acting was good and best scene of the movie was with the drug dealer and they first introduce Hit Girl. Thought they did that great and almost stuck to the comic completely.
To me the comic book was not a typical comic book, and the movie felt like a typical comic book movie. Maybe would enjoyed it more if I did not read the comic, I don't know.

Thumbs down from me. I just didn't give a shit about the story, I didn't think there was any kind of style to the action, I didn't laugh, I thought the kid playing Kick Ass stunk in and out of costume, and it wasn't nearly as over the top as people were letting on. There were no characters, there was no subtext.
I recognized the worst parts of Mark Millar in the story.
I think restructuring the story so there's no reveal probably hurt it, and it was just very linear.
The guy who called in and said it was total geek fantasy had it right. It was way too much about fantasy, and yet failed to make any kind of comment on fantasy. The point of taking a genre story and pushing the boundaries of it is to explore that genre, this is more like "Not your grandma's super hero." It's like if AMP energy drink and AXE body spray got together and wrote a super hero story.
The positives for me were it was a hard R, and I'm in favor of any movie being a hard R. The little girl who played Hit Girl was actually pretty good, especially when playing her alter ego. I wish there were more scenes between Big Daddy and Hit Girl as their real selves, because those were the best scenes in the movie.

This was a great movie. It was a tremendous fun and it has a fast tempo. It really moves.
It is ultra-violent and graphic but, that's exactly what it's trying to accomplish. I gave a similar review to ZOMBIELAND a while back. The gore is part of it. As is the shock.
Hating this movie , or ZOMBIELAND, or KILL BILL, or ... for that matter... NATURAL BORN KILLERS, for gratuitous gore probably shouldn't have seen it in the first place.

Against my better judgment, I went last night. It substantiated all the fears and annoyances I had going in. I usually agree with all of G-Baby's movie assessments, but this in this instance, I'm on the opposite side of the reaction spectrum. I thought the movie amounted to little more than contrived hipster posturing. The tone and style gave me whiplash with its constant, contradictory vacillation. It was adapted with the overeagerness of being satirical and outrageously badass, but without the care and craft of actually following through with those good intentions.
The little girl stuff is the epitome of gimmickry because it's the only thing the movie has to offer to make it stand out in the genre, and the story provides zero justification for why she needed to be in the position of actively participating in her dad's violent vigilante quest in the first place. She's such a sketchily defined character that she never registers as anything other than a cute young actor going through the motions of venal adult behavior. I didn't think it was tasteless since I'm incapable of being offended by cinematic content, but it definitely struck me as permeating with lameness: all of her big curse moments are preceded by a "Wait for it..." sensation, and her skill with handling weaponry and applying brute force is wildly incongruous with what a girl that age would be capable of. Not that I was looking for stark realism or anything, but she didn't have super powers so she should've been tethered to some kind of measure of plausibility.
They should've just called the movie Hit Girl and scaled back the participation of the other characters, because everything else in the movie comes off like an afterthought to her big showstopping moments. All the chips are put in on one suppporting member of the ensemble, which creates an effect of imbalance and lopsidedness. The movie is named after a character who has become totally incidental to its discussion, and with fitting cause because he comes off so unsensational compared to the centerpiece and meal ticket for arousing water cooler chatter among the geek community.

What "powers" somebody does/doesn't have is of no importance in movies like this. In KILL BILL... The Bride is able to defy gravity (several times) during the restaraunt battle. In CHARLIE'S ANGELS... the girls are also able to defy physics and gravity.
etc etc etc
And how many zany comedies out there feature some kooky scenario where people fall over a railing or something... and bounce & tumble to the ground... only to get up without a scratch. In ANCHORMAN... there's a 20-man fight scene that should have left all the characters severely disfigured.
etc etc
If it moves the plot along... movies & physics simply do not go together.
In KICK ASS, the impossible violence was supposed to be almost cartoony, in much the same way that the characters in ANCHORMAN were impossibly stupid.
Logic need not apply.

The movie is named after a character who has become totally incidental to its discussion, and with fitting cause because he comes off so unsensational compared to the centerpiece and meal ticket for arousing water cooler chatter among the geek community.
You are the worst!

i hate it when motherfuckers tear a movie apart like they are movie critics. Jesus Christ on a pony, just go see a movie and say if its good or bad. Stop with the long winded "Oh this is the way it was or should have been" descriptions.
I miss the 80's. No internet. People said the movie was good or bad and that was IT.
this thread is about a comic book movie, what were you expecting?

If they made a movie that could stand alone, then judging it solely on its merits would be the way to go.
But they didn't. They made a satire. So it is not only appropriate, but it's necessary to evaluate it within the broader context of other film and comics and pop culture in general.

I'm confused by your statement.
This movie was self-contained. It did not presume that the audience read (or even had knowledge of) the books.

I haven't seen the movie, but when I read reviews that say things like:
"very funny riff on the quasi-porn world of comic books"
"extremely knowing in its appeal to connoisseurs of comic strips and video games"
"the film at once embraces and satirizes contemporary action-film clichés"
"scathingly satiric and fan-boy celebratory"
"a giddy deconstruction of caped crusaders and men of steel"
It makes it clear that the film's appeal lies in playing off the established themes and cliches that appear in action/super hero comics/movies. Meaning that you need to be familiar with the existing material to fully appreciate what they're offering. Which is why reviewing satire is not as simple as "good or bad."

Saw it and enjoyed the movie. But what the fuck are parents bringing their little kids in to watch this? I thought Marcus (Cage's former partner) would take up the mantle of Big Daddy and fight crime or join the fight too. Sequel???
Am I the only person who thought the little girl in the trailer wasn't funny?

sucks Superman's ass.
Liked it.
Ebert's review is somewhat understandable. I can see people being put off by the film, and the opposing ideas of this 11 year old girl and child soldier like, killing machine qualities...
But I also think he just didn't get it (and it's easy to trash something you don't get...i.e. Lost thread)
You need to have a frame of reference within the genre to really get the satire of it, and I really doubt he did...if you read the rest of his review after bitching about the soullessness of the violence, and then see the movie, it doesn't really match up, telling me that he didn't understand what they were being satirical about in certain spots, and why certain scenes he thought should be there AREN'T in the film.
It's not groundbreaking stuff, but it's a fun film.

Fucking movie was great. I really dont understand what people are expecting when they go and see a comic book movie. Completely lived up to the hype and then some.

I loved it. It was way better of a superhero flick then I thought it would be. Thought it would be 90% teen comedy, 10% comic movie but it was much closer to 50/50.
Same for the shock value. Yea, the first few things Hit Girl says are a little shocking if you don't know, but the movie settles down and doesn't go out of its way to be over the top.
I welcome a sequel.

Totally awesome. Kinda' disappointed the girl only said cunt once. Though it'd be more of a staple of her vocabulary.
By the way the playstation store just released KICK-ASS the game. It's a decent game for $16. Kinda' street fighter style.

Mclovin sucks. I'm not even going to try to justify my opinion with a drawn out response, the fucking kid can't act and his quirky nerdiness isn't funny.
