I think it (Shadow of a Doubt) is not only a great movie, but its a movie that especially works because of black & white film. The manner in that film that Hitchcock uses shadows and smoke is amazing, but only could be done properly in b&w.

somebody help me with this one: it was a black and white horror film where the local folks would get sucked on the back of the neck with a toilet plunger and dragged under ground in a quicksand type of substance, and then return as aliens. faces blank. this movie freaked me out as a kid. i remember the boy running to the cop station, only to find that the police sgt had been alienized. was it invasion of the body snatchers? i don't think so/

the keys were the plunger and the quicksand. anybody? somebody?

Charlie chaplins "the kid". I know they're not movies but the old twilight zones are a work of art, the use of shadows is amazing in black and white on some episodes, very creative and creepy.

A sci-fi movie that doesn't attempt to look "sci-fi" at all. Really great.

I now that it is a black and white film, but never considered Schidnler's List to be one. I guess when I think of black and white movies I think of an era, rather than an 'art' form. So while I love the afformentioned film, it's not my favorite black and white movie. That title would have to go to Citizen Kane.

And on a side note, I'll be in a black and white short film which has me kind of excited. Nothing big, just an NYU thing, but who knows.

Kubrick had contracted for Sellars
to do a 4th part in the movie...

Though I haven't reviewed this entire thread, if no one's yet gone on and on about Wild Strawberries, consider it on-and-on'd, here. I watch this top shelf movie every year around Oscars, at least. I know ... reading a movie ....

Italian Neo-realism is an influencial source. Umberto D by DeSica is my favorite.
It is an unbelievably sad story of an old man taking care of his dog (which reminds me of a minimalist film with Michelle Williams called Wendy and Lucy)(which was not in Black and White)
