I watched "Sunshine" again on HBO the other day. This sci fi flick was in the theaters in the summer of '07. The first 2/3 of the movie was riveting, compelling, visually stunning, only to fizzle out (no pun intended), in the 3rd act.
What other movies come to mind?

I haven't seen it in awhile, and this might happen in the second act, but Gangs of New York. I find it hugely interesting, with lots of challenging emotional questions up until the point when Daniel Day Lewis finds out that Leonardo DiCaprio is lying about who he is, then it just descends into a fiery maelstrom of silliness.
Life Aquatic- totally ends like they were running out of paper.

Apocalypse Now. Although that was due more to Marlon Brando showing up late, not being prepared and then leaving after 2 days of filming.
I believe Harvey Keitel was originally cast to be in the movie but the studio wanted Brando supposedly because he was more bankable after The Godfather. I wonder what type of movie it would had been with Keitel.

FUNNY PEOPLE and DISTRICT 9 are definitely contenders.

Thought of another one. One of my all time favorite films: Blazing Saddles.
It fell apart when we see it was a movie set and they start fighting with the musical guys. It's like they couldn't figure out how to end the movie as a western.

That's not the third act you silly goose, it's like the last three minutes of the film, if that. Blazing Saddles has an amazing third act. "Someone's gonna have to go back and get a shit load of dimes!"

That's all you had to say.
Look who you were replying to.
If the internet didn't exist Gvac would be a crazy bum hanging out in parks, bars and libraries, bothering people with his insane yet inane theories.

You can't say Full Metal Jacket, it's a two act movie. And I like the second half, people have sticks up their asses.

The second half of FMJ pays off on everything set up in the boot camp section. People who say that they don't like the second half as much don't know what the hell they're talking about.
I'd say "The Departed", because that movie totally went off the rails in the 3rd act (I mean, people were literally standing around waiting to get shot in the head), but that would imply that the 1st and 2nd acts weren't total messes too.
