I thought this deserved it's own thread: I want to talk about disturbing commercials. There seems to be a growing trend in television advertising towards vaguely frightening/strange commercials. I just saw one of the worst ones yet--the Burger King commercial where the group of guys is about to go into the Burger King, but one of the friends doesn't want to go in, because he's too self-conscious about his tiny hands. This makes two disturbing campaigns for Burger King now--the tiny hands guy and of course, the infamously creepy Burger King himself.

Now, another company that seems to be taking the same tactic of creeping out viewers in order to have their product stick in your head is Skittles. Skittles has been rolling out these bizarre commercials for some time; the most recent one is actually kind of tame compared to the others--where the Korean Scottish guy is sitting there and another Korean Scot comes up to him and starts yelling; it's also a little racist.

There's also one where the guy is eating Skittles out of his friend's hour glass, and when the friend confronts him about it, he starts to age rapidly. Of course, there's the Palm Pre girl. The one about the juggler in the park is like something right out of a Japanese horror movie. I'm really undecided about whether or not these are intentionally disturbing; I think maybe they were going for something really 'arty' and it just fell really, really flat. And there was the failed CGI Orville Redenbacher campaign that thankfully just faded away a couple years ago. But you have to hand it to the ad execs who come up with this shit--scaring the bejeezus out of people with a 20-second commercial spot makes a lot of sense. You remember these commercials, and the imagery penetrates your unconscious. The internet has been a-buzz with the creepy Burger King for a long time now. And I think they have another creepy winner with the tiny hands guy.

In the future how about trying not to state every disturbing commercial, simply state one and allow others to join in the conversation.

Everybody would do well to remember that this is the guy that pees on his own floor and thinks that eating is just shitting in reverse talking about what HE finds disturbing.

i find the new Geico commercials
(with the pile of money with glasses
and 'somebody's watching you' playing)
odd and mildly disturbing

it's going to get worse before it gets better, just use the things you want to use and be sensible.

I actully like both the Burger King and Skittles commercials. I think the Burger King ones are genuinely funny. I find it odd that you would pick these to focus upon with all the other much more awful choices.
