This is just my opinion and I know quite a few of you will probably disagree with me but hey... thats just my opinion maaan.
Im sick of turning on the terrestrial radio on and when i put it on i hear whiny whiny new music that is actually called rock. Personally i think emo music ruined rock music (im not talking about the 80/early 90s music that was called emo like Sunny Day Real Estate and Fugazi) im talking crap like My Chemical Romance and New Found Glory.
Not too mention the normal popular music is awful too, i cant believe the amount of hits Lady GaGa and The Black Eyed Peas get on youtube.
And some bands get called great when in my opinion their JUST barely mediocre, bands like Nickelback and Seether.
I was raised listening to all kinds of music from classical, to jazz (love me some miles davis!), jam bands, 70s soul, psychedelic rock, 60s/70s classic rock, hiphop/rap, outlaw country, and 80s/90s alternative. And i really do love many kinds of old music everything from John Coltrane to 13th floor elevators to black sabbath to the smiths to hank williams jr to the replacements to beethoven and jethro tull.
While there was GREAT music back in the day too i love a lot of music but for me, i was born in 1986 and grew up with 90s music.
There was an explosion of awesome rock music and it was called grunge, but not only grunge but most popular rock music was great. Bands like Alice in Chains, Soundgarden, Nirvana, The Pixies, White Zombie, Kyuss, Soul Asylum, Stone Temple Pilots, 311 etc etc.
And all of 90% of these bands were popular and all over the radio.
Now,
to me most popular rock is whiny. And there still are some good rock bands but they arent the popular stuff on the radio.
Same goes for hiphop. Today hiphop is all about promoting themselves, money, rehashing older rappers, and weak beats.
If youre a hiphop/rap fan you KNOW the 90s was an amazing time and many rappers were flourishing.
Nas, Bone Thugs N Harmony, Wu Tang Clan, 2Pac, Tribe Called Quest, Mobb Deep, Notorious B.I.G., The Roots, Pharcyde, Gang Starr, Dr. Dre, Pete Rock & CL Smooth, Gza etc etc
Nowadays i see teenagers listenin to Souljah Boy and Lil Wayne thinking its amazingly original and tough. Souljah Boy is pop and has no skill and Lil Wayne sounds extremely raspy and the quality of his songs fell since Cash $ Records and now he's trying to do rock and its sounds even worse.
And popular music today in general seems like theres much more of a focus on making money. Many of these popular songs dont seem to have passion and they are just so people can download songs on itunes. Back in the 60s and 70s (another time when there was some AMAZING music) rock musicians made ALBUMS and i mean TRUE albums. They are a true work of art and a lot of time and passion went into making music, albums like Dark Side Of The Moon, The White Album, The Ramones first album etc etc
I'll let the kids listen to their music but ill stick with stuff before 2000. Rock music used to ROCK YOUR SOCKS OFF and even the softer rock music was great.
Maybe its just me though :annoyed:
