This is just my opinion and I know quite a few of you will probably disagree with me but hey... thats just my opinion maaan.

Im sick of turning on the terrestrial radio on and when i put it on i hear whiny whiny new music that is actually called rock. Personally i think emo music ruined rock music (im not talking about the 80/early 90s music that was called emo like Sunny Day Real Estate and Fugazi) im talking crap like My Chemical Romance and New Found Glory.
Not too mention the normal popular music is awful too, i cant believe the amount of hits Lady GaGa and The Black Eyed Peas get on youtube.
And some bands get called great when in my opinion their JUST barely mediocre, bands like Nickelback and Seether.

I was raised listening to all kinds of music from classical, to jazz (love me some miles davis!), jam bands, 70s soul, psychedelic rock, 60s/70s classic rock, hiphop/rap, outlaw country, and 80s/90s alternative. And i really do love many kinds of old music everything from John Coltrane to 13th floor elevators to black sabbath to the smiths to hank williams jr to the replacements to beethoven and jethro tull.

While there was GREAT music back in the day too i love a lot of music but for me, i was born in 1986 and grew up with 90s music.
There was an explosion of awesome rock music and it was called grunge, but not only grunge but most popular rock music was great. Bands like Alice in Chains, Soundgarden, Nirvana, The Pixies, White Zombie, Kyuss, Soul Asylum, Stone Temple Pilots, 311 etc etc.
And all of 90% of these bands were popular and all over the radio.

Now,
to me most popular rock is whiny. And there still are some good rock bands but they arent the popular stuff on the radio.

Same goes for hiphop. Today hiphop is all about promoting themselves, money, rehashing older rappers, and weak beats.
If youre a hiphop/rap fan you KNOW the 90s was an amazing time and many rappers were flourishing.
Nas, Bone Thugs N Harmony, Wu Tang Clan, 2Pac, Tribe Called Quest, Mobb Deep, Notorious B.I.G., The Roots, Pharcyde, Gang Starr, Dr. Dre, Pete Rock & CL Smooth, Gza etc etc

Nowadays i see teenagers listenin to Souljah Boy and Lil Wayne thinking its amazingly original and tough. Souljah Boy is pop and has no skill and Lil Wayne sounds extremely raspy and the quality of his songs fell since Cash $ Records and now he's trying to do rock and its sounds even worse.

And popular music today in general seems like theres much more of a focus on making money. Many of these popular songs dont seem to have passion and they are just so people can download songs on itunes. Back in the 60s and 70s (another time when there was some AMAZING music) rock musicians made ALBUMS and i mean TRUE albums. They are a true work of art and a lot of time and passion went into making music, albums like Dark Side Of The Moon, The White Album, The Ramones first album etc etc

I'll let the kids listen to their music but ill stick with stuff before 2000. Rock music used to ROCK YOUR SOCKS OFF and even the softer rock music was great.

Maybe its just me though :annoyed:

People said pretty much the same thing about the 90's music you so love that you're saying about music today. And the decade before that, and before that and so on and so on...

Dude!

There's just as much great music being made today as there was in those good ol' days of the 90's you're talking about. Due to consolidation in the radio and record industries, though, it's just harder to find these days. I'm buying just as much music today as I did 10, 15, 20, or 25 years ago.

Just listen to less bands that are actually on the radio, problem solved.

I know, and i stated that theres still good bands, but there just not played on the radio and you just have to look harder. But my main point im trying to get accross is that most popular music before this decade just seemed to be of a lot better quality.

That's your subjective opinion.

If you're talking the overall radio play and charts in general, no, the 90's were not very different at all.

Stop the presses! Two old men don't like rap! They think its a bunch of muckety-muck. It's music for whippersnappers. 23-Skidoo. Dames and stems.

Sorry, I'm trying to use language you two would understand.

It couldn't be easier to find music these days. I recommend following labels that release records that you like. Chances are good that you and the people deciding to distribute the records you're buying will have similar tastes. Also, go that bands myspace and check out who they're friends with. OR even better - pick an obscure record that you love -type in into google in quotations, then type +blogspot find a music blog that posted your particular record and see what else they're posting. Easy as a peach.

I have never in my life been so inundated with new material to sift though - I'm in music heaven. This year I have only listened to records released in 2009 - I've literally listened to over 150 NEW acts this year. I mean I hadn't heard of them until this year. There is a lot of quality stuff to hear.

Try "Thee Oh Sees" if you're wondering where rock music went.

iscream22, listen to Clutch, Coheed and Cambria(you'll get over his high pitched voice when you realize how good the music is), The Hold Steady(Craig Finn is a story teller if I've ever heard one), Thrice(who reinvent themselves after every album) and Gaslight Anthem(who are possibly the funnest band around).

And then realize the 00's are jsut like the 90's just with a different sound. History has a funny way of repeating itself.
