View Full Version : The Best Videogame You Weren't Expecting

I've got games on the brain today. Tonight's topic: what's the best videogame you ever played that you were completely not expecting to be all that great? This could include any game that you thought was going to be good, but weren't expecting it to make you jizz in your pants
(http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4pXfHLUlZf4)
For me, the best game I wasn't expecting was Castlevania: Symphony of Night.
http://www.cheatcc.com/imagesx360/castlevaniasymphonyxbox_00.jpg
Seriously, I remember the year 1997 strictly because of this game.

Symphony of the Night is absolutely amazing. I play through that game at least once a year. And while I didn't expect it to be THAT good, I was a huge Castlevania fan so I was expecting something good.
This winter I picked up Valkyria Chronicles because a couple of my friends were raving about it. It looked like a completely generic Japanese RPG. It ended up being one of my favorite games of all time. From the gameplay to the graphics to the music to the plot to the characters it perfectly hit the mark almost every single time.

I still don't understand why Konami won't bring SotN sequels to larger platforms than gameboy advance. That game beats the ass off even Metal Gear Solid in replay factor. SotN is the one game that I still have in its original cd case which I lovingly dust off.
Another game that got me was Xenogears. I played the game about seven years after it came out and was blown away by it. Though it was far from perfect, it was a billion times better than I had been expecting.

Oh yeah, Xenogears caught me off guard too. After Final Fantasy 7 I went nuts buying Square games. Almost anything they released I bought. Xenogears was on its way to becoming my favorite RPG ever. Incredibly epic moments, an engaging storyline that at first seemed convoluted like so many RPGs but actually came together perfectly, a really original battle system and a great cast of characters. And then......
the second disc. Where they obviously ran out of time and/or money. That whole second disc is probably the biggest disappointment I've ever had in a video game. They actually pulled off having almost every person on the planet be killed and turned into monsters barely noticeable. I wish so much they could have finished that game properly.
Although this is off topic another game that was obviously abandoned was Knights of The Old Republic 2. It's a bit different than Xenogears in that it was abandoned closer to the end of the game and was left so unfinished that the ending is incomprehensible. It's like you end up on the final planet but you don't know where you are or how you got there.
I guess this worth mentioning. When I was younger (back in the NES days) my parents would get me a couple of games for Christmas every year and essentially pick them at random. One year I open one of the games up, look at the title and think 'What the hell is this?" I had no idea what it is, had never heard of it ever before.
A little game called Final Fantasy.

I one hundred percent agree with Fallout 3. It is by far the best game I ever played EVER. Does it mean it is my fave...nahh. For this category I will have to say "Dragon Force" for the Sega Saturn.
I arrived a lil late on the Sega Saturn scene in late 1997. My friend turned me on to one of the best WWII RPG games ever, Iron Storm. I bought a Saturn, then he bought a Playstation One and gave me a mess of games he bought for the Saturn. One of them was "Dragon Force" and I was hooked on the son of a bitch for a good year or so. It had multiple endings and you learned about other characters as you beat the game, and played with the "evil" characters.
Another one I am going to include in this category was "Destiny of an Emperor" for the NES. It was a game on sale in 1991 for $12.95 and I asked me mum to purchase it. This game is forever a game I was not expecting to be so great and still will play it on emulators and so forth. I remember it was a game in "Nintendo Power" magazine that was always top 5 in the 'experts' category for best games of the month from like 1990-1992 (the other catgeories were players and retailers). I remember I got friends hooked on the game and when they went to buy the game it cost them like $29-35 dollars. Even as far in as 1995. I laughed at that.

Well, my most recent SHOCK has been Star Wars Force Unleashed. It is a LOT of fun running around grabbing TIE Fighters out of the sky and dropping them on people, using people as lightning grenades, etc. Really cool stuff, excellent story and graphics.
Before that was Lost Odyssey for 360. This is THE Role PLaying Game that I've been wanting to play since my heart of heart RPG's from the 90s (Final Fantasy IV & VI, Xenogears, etc) It is made by the same guy who made all of the original Final Fantasy games (Hironubo Sakaguchi) after he left and made his own game company (Mistwalker). It also has Nubou Uematsu's beautiful music in it. Fanastic gripping storyline mostly, lot of emotion in some parts, great battles, great abilites, and lots of challenge. Can't recommend it enough.
Before that, Call of Duty II sucked me in big time. Not only am I a world war buff, but this is the game that singlehandedly hooked me on unlocking 360 Achievements. I played this game while having the flu (best time to game honestly), and I played it for two-three days straight. Pretty damn hard, but totally satisfying once beating the game on the hardest level, and becoming part of the 1000/1000 club.
This list is getting too long, so....
Final Fantasy XI Online - Beta tested this for Sony, and played it off and on from 2003 to a few months ago. Done now, but I started multiple characters from the start, which is WAY more difficuly and longer to play then shitty WoW and other MMORPGs. Lots of fun, lots and lots of time and effort to put into it, etc.
I'll think more back to my older gaming days for another post. I've been playing since commodore and coleco.

A little game called Final Fantasy.
I will never forget the first time playing Final Fantasy. I was instantly hooked, specially with the music. There are two songs from the series that get my inner child screaming and gets me so excited:
The Crystal Theme (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-gqC96M4nDE)
The Prologue (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lEti8uugFSE)
I still listen to the orchestrated soundtracks from time to time. It's amazing how "video game music" can really be an impact on one's mind and soul. I know it is silly, but some people have heard me playing these songs and were shocked to hear it was from a video game.
Another series that has EXCELLENT music is the Suikoden or Genso Suikoden series.

I do the same thing with the video game music. When people ask, I just mumble that it was some guy named Uematsu. They think I'm eclectic.
The first Squaresoft game I ever played was this little game in 1993. http://www.wiiland.com/nintendo-wii/images/secret-of-mana-wii.jpg
Secret of Mana... so much happened in 1993. I discovered Rush, Barnes and Noble, that Cadbury mini-eggs were awesome, and this new band had a catchy song, Mr.Jones. SoM made me discover Squaresoft- which prompted me to buy final fantasy 2 for SNES, and whaddya know, FFIII came out the same month I beat FFII. OMFGRPQ trifecta.

Oh shit how did I forget Suikoden? I remember when I got that game too. The day it came out I was coming down with a a really bad cold that turned out to be the fluu. On the way home from the doctor my mom stopped at the mall and bought me a game because she must have somehow known I was going to be knocked out for a week or two. I go looking around EB, finding nothing that interests me except a placeholder box for Suikoden. It was coming out that day but they hadn't received their shipment yet. So I say forget it, mom, don't waste your money on another game I probably won't like. We go get something to eat and on the way back to the car we pass that EB and I spot a FedEx guy leaving the store. I go in and check and yes, they got their shipment in. Suikoden was the game that finally hooked me on RPGs. Great music and a great, adult story. The whole series except 4 was exceptional.

I am SO pissed that the Sony PSP Remake/Port of Suikoden I & II never came out in the states. The graphics and imporvments look so great.
One regret of mine was never finishing Suikoden III. I got 80 hours in and my PS2 mem card got corrupt. :(
Another series that had potential was Xenosaga. It was Part one of the SIX games planned for the series. THe Fifth chapter, Xenogears, was going to be made but they screwed part II up and changed it to a trilogy due to low sales. :(

Sniper Elite for the PS2. Even slower than any of the Splinter Cell games - but really enjoyable (if you are the patient type.)

Lost Odyssey I expected to be an average game that I played to pass the time, but I ended up putting hundreds of hours into it and not getting tired of it.
UFC Unleashed actually really surprised me, I thought it would be overly complicated and frustrating with lots of issues, but it turned out to be really fun.

I really miss the LucasArts games of the 90's. They had an incredible run of really great video games.
There's a few:
1) Final Fantasy VI (SNES) - I was a big fan of IV and played it like crazy (still playing it if you count the sequel they just released on WiiWare), so when this came out, I was very skeptical that anything could ever measure up to IV, which sounds like an insane statement now. Against my better judgment, I broke down and picked it up, and it instantly became one of my three favorite games of all time.
2) Knights Of The Old Republic (Xbox) - I liked the flying games (X-Wing, Tie Fighter), but I've always thought all the other games sucked. Bought it used for $20 at Gamestop, and probably played through it 10 times.
3) Okami (Wii) - When I found out what the game was, I thought there was no way this thing could be any good. Probably the best game on the Wii to date.

Ohhh man, I remember when I bought my fist PC in 1995 and bought a pack of Lucasarts games which included "Max and Sam" "Revenge of the Tentacle (a Maniac Mansion sequel...also a kick ass Lucas Arts game for the NES and PC)" and "Indiana Jones and the secret of Atlantis." God those games were fun...then I remember the Dig and a few others.
I know a lot of people made a big deal out of X-Wing vs. Tie Fighter, but my personal fave of the series was the final one, "X-Wing Alliance." It was awesome to play online and you could create all sorts of scenarios for yourself where you face off against Super Star Destroyers, frigates, pirates, etc...God I loved that one. The final mission in story mode was flying into the second Death Star and then flying out at top speed. Great fucking games. Good call on Lucas Arts.
I know they weren't adventure games but I LOVED the 2 Rebel Assault games by Lucasarts.
BTW, the guy who was behind Grim Fandango, Tim Schafer, is still making games. They aren't adventure games but they retain his sense of humor and style. One is called Psychonauts and it was released for the PC, PS2 and XBox and the other is Brutal Legend which comes out this winter for PS3, 360 and maybe PC.

I know.
There are a lot of reports about it, but Xenosaga by Monolith Software is a prequel, with Xenogears being the fifth sequel in the series of six games. Monolith was hoping to purchase the rights for Xenogears from Square Enix, being that the creator of both Xenogears and Xenosaga is Tetsuya Takahashi (http://xenosaga.wikia.com/index.php?title=Tetsuya_Takahashi&action=edit&redlink=1), who left Squaresoft in 1999 along with Hirohide Sugiura. Using funds from Namco, they restarted Monolith Soft and the Xenosaga project.
Apparently SE would not budge on letting up the rights for the game, and now Monolith says that Xenosaga is a "spiritual successor" to Xenogears. Hell, Citan Uzuki from Xenogears showed up as Jin Uzuki in Xenosaga, a blatant throwback or successor/ancestor of Citan. There was the potential. Shame.

Battlezone for the PC. It was a Real Time Strategy Game like Command and Conquer or Warcraft EXCEPT you weren't some omniprescient overlord in the sky. You had a first person perspective and you own ship and you would fly around the map giving commands to other units or building shit. It sounds a bit overwhelming but it worked so well. I liked Mortal Kombat and the Sega system is where I was first introduced to it.

Lemmings! lol The best ones were the ones with the time bomb and the little number count down above their heads. It's hilarious when they say "Oh no!" right before they blow up.

I'm a big fan of the Ratchet and Clank franchise. Every game has had great play control and has been a lot of fun. And possibly the best graphics on the console.
Freedom Fighters on PS2 was one I randomly picked up and loved. I think I played it 3 times.
Recently Dead Space. I though it would be a boring single player FPS, but was a great play with great graphics, sound and suspense
I had no experience with the Battlefield games and just bought Battlefield 1943 on xbox live because some friends were playing. I'm completely hooked on this game now and have even stopped playing Call of Duty World at War altogether.
I find the multiplayer experience so much more rewarding. I love getting a whole squad together and then planning and executing a well established strategy. Great game and totally worth the $15.

Another fantastic game was System Shock 2. The game was made in 1998, and I had never heard of its existence until 2005. It was being offered via free download as abandonware on the underdogs site for a few years. I wasn't expecting much. HOLY SHIT. One of the best immersive sci-fi games ever made.
It was a blend of survival horror, FPS and RPG, very similar to the gameplay of Deus Ex. FPS in that you could, if you so chose, upgraded your character to be able to wield the standard plethora of guns and laser rifles to shoot anything that moves. RPG in the sense that you upgraded your character throughout the game to increase proficiency in four realms of abilities (such as hacking, physical resistance to radiation, health bar, psychic powers, etc.) Horror in that you never had anywhere near enough ammo to kill everything, your weapons broke after a few uses so you had to use them sparingly, the difficulty level was set at hard the whole way, and the enemies respawned in completely random locations just to freak you the hell out. Oh yeah, and the enemies were terrifying to behold such as the Cyborg Midwife here:
http://www.sshock2.com/ss2mmdb/screenshots/midwife2.jpg
Cyborg Midwives like to hum hideous lullabies as they talk about how their Little Ones need lots of meat to grow big and strong while they fucking KILLED you after showing up in a sharp corner that you had already cleared out. Every single enemy could and did kill you with ease in this game. Great storyline too... SHODAN (my avatar here) is one of the best villains in gaming.
After saying all this praise though, the game was imperfect. It had a horribly weak ending and the game itself did very poorly in sales in spite of getting top grades in all the reviews made on it. EA holds the rights for the game and have since buried the game.
The series occupies the same position of limbo that Xenogears is stuck in; even though EA doesn't have the slightest intention to make any money with the game, they refused Irrational (the company which made the game along with Thief) and its successors rights to go back to the series. As a result, the series' creator made up Bioshock which, like Xenosaga was for Xenogears, was crafted as a spiritual successor to System Shock.
But yeah, for a game that was 7 years past its questionable prime to amaze the hell out of me... that's quality right there. It's amazing it got passed by and ignored by most gamers.
That's such a shame you didn't play SS2 in 1998. That game was so incredibly ahead of its time. It was like a game that was made 10 years in the future was sent back in time. There has never been a game that used sound as well as SS2 did. So fucking creepy. They first time a cyborg midwife sprinted at me out of nowhere screaming about her babies I literally had to stop playing. And shit only got more scary. The spiders in this game were so fucking creepy there is a fan made patch out there removing them from the game. I still think SS2 is far superior than Bioshock. Bioshock is a pale imitation of SS2 with a stupid morals system on top. And while SS2's mid-game twist was obvious well before you even got there the way it was pulled off was such a complete mindfuck I can't even accurately describe it. You walk into a room, find exactly what you thought you would and right when you are about to say lame.......... HOLY SHIT. Even though Bioshock's twist was a great twist SS2's twist was perfectly executed. And the rest of the game didn't go slowly downhill, unlike Bioshock. SS2's ending was pretty bad but at least everything running up to it, including the last two battles, was as good as games will ever get. The last boss battle was really original.
There is so much good about System Shock 2. It's simply one of the best of all time.

I found this article on SHODAN, the AI in the System Shock series that develops a genocidal god-complex after its morality protocols are removed by a hacker:http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2009/08/12/the-girl-who-wanted-to-be-god/
I actually found the article a fun read. We'll never see her again, so this makes for a fitting epitaph. Oh, and if anyone actually thinks they might want to play the game for the first time, don't hit the link... spoilers galore.
Back to those goddamn enemies... you had the pipe and shotgun hybrids who were basically former crewmen that have some semblance of awareness in spite of their mutations, so occasionally you'd hear "I'm SORRRYY" as this horrible thing runs up to bludgeon you from behind. Ecgh. Creepy.

WOW SS2 sounds like a great game...for me to watch someone else play, that is. lol I've always been intrigued by and loved these games and their storylines and gameplay but for the life of me, I just can't play it myself. Scares the living shit out of me from the start and I have to put it down. That's why cousins/friends come in handy so I can watch THEM play them, hehe.

I just purchased the 80's game "Dragon's Lair" on BLU-Ray. I loved this game when it originally came out. I could play all the way through without dying once and slay the dragon - save the princess. Now, 25 plus years later I'm curious to see if this game will be as fun now - probably be let down.

Little Nemo: The Dream Master - NES
It didn't look like much from the cover when renting this game back in the day.
But if you like playing as helper animals in game play. This one takes the cake. It has lots of that.
I Lol as the gorilla in L2 think it is. There is this glitch if you run fast at the dead tree the gorilla will climb it with its elbow.

A Boy and His Blob - NES
An even older game along the same lines.
You feed a blob jellybeans. Each jelly bean turns the blob into tools/items for you to use to get through the game play.

I picked up Battlefield 1943 a few weeks ago for about $3 on PSN (game sharing) - I wasn't expecting much, but it's actually really good for a D/L only game. It's probably going to keep me going until Modern Warfare 2 is released.

Far Cry comes to mind for me. It came out of nowhere and it blew every game out of the water in terms of graphics at the time. The gameplay was great too, some tough areas, at the time it was definitely the best game I'd played.
