Truly is incredible. I've never used it before, was always a shuffle man myself, but tonight i decided to try something new. Threw on a song by The Faces and it gave me a mix playlist of 25 amazing somgs. I'm offically hooked and never going back to shuffle. I always thought their shuffle program was kinda shitty, especially on an iPod. I have roughly 1700 songs on my iPod and I swear when I hit shuffle in the car it plays the same 300 songs over and over. well from now on no mas, fuck shuffle! Who else enjoys the wonderous mix feature that is Genius?

A heads up: if you have a lot of songs, and you haven't turned Genius on before, the initial setup takes a very long time -- in my case, with about 15,000 tracks, it took well over half an hour.
And, yeah, I guess that Apple can use this to scan your collection for illegal tracks, but if they were so inclined to do that, they could just get that info anyway. And what does them knowing my collection prove anyway? If a track in my library is in MP3 format, and was not purchased from the iTunes Store, prove that I either didn't buy it from an online store that sells tracks as MP3's, like Amazon or eMusic, or that I didn't rip it off a legally purchased CD.

The new iTunes and iPods just announced have a new function called "Genius Mixes." From what I can tell (haven't used it yet), it's takes the Genius Playlist idea and turns it into a genius radio channel.
I'll be trying it out tomorrow.

How does it compare to Pandora? I just discovered the Pandora app on my iPhone. It is free and is pretty useful in finding new music. You can't control the songs that play but it takes previous songs that you liked or disliked and plays new songs accordingly.

I just thought it was some bullshit that recommended songs constantly, I'm trying to set it up now, but it says the iTunes Store doesn't recognize my library.

Genius mixes are limited to songs you already own. So you won't get new music.
Also, with Pandora, I've never heard new music using it. The times I've done it always have older music even if it's bands such as Foo Fighters or White Stripes still putting out music.

From the brief spiel I saw on apple.com, I think you do it after you sync your iPod/iPhone.
I just dl'ed it as well.

You have to click on Store > Update Genius to make the new tab appear.
Downloaded it and it doesn't seem too different. I'm in the process of ripping all my CDs to my iMac so Genius actually will have enough songs to create playlists for me.

One big improvement is that you can now transfer music between your authorized computers. This is huge for me, as my old computer works as a server that holds my main library, while my new laptop is primarily for new releases.

Only if the two computers are on the same network. For example, you can't transfer between your work computer and your home computer even if they are both authorized on the account.

That's when you need Simplify Media.
I don't really keep any music on my work computer - just use simplify to stream from both of my home servers.

I have one issue with the Genius Mixes (so far). itunes generated 12 such mixes based upon my music library, including things I don't have checked. I got 6 rock mixes, 3 alternative 1 R&B, 1 soundtrack, and 1 children's music.
But when I sync to my iPod Touch, only 9 of those mixes get loaded, including some of the rock mixes and alternative mixes that would be great. I guess there's not enough room on my Touch.
If that's going to happen I want the chance to select the mixes.

I don't like the mixes mostly because I can't control them, and the amount of information you get about them is pretty limited.

I do like the Genius playlists you get from individual songs, but I'm not as impressed with the Mixes thing.

I love the Genius Mixes thing. It hasn't really let me down yet, but I wish it would let you actually group the bands together.
