I'm looking into going to Oktoberfest in Munich, 200 year celebration coming up next year so it seems like the time to go.
Anyone here ever been or know anyone who has? A couple of days is all I suppose I'll need as I can only consume so many liters of beer before I pass out. Need to book it soon as hotels are already taking reservations.

When you drink out of the boot, make sure you turn it right as the beer gets to the ankle.

Just don't get sick while you're over there. I hear the lines to see a doctor stretch for miles.

My Cuz has went a couple of times and I have seen pics of a big grassy hill outside the tent area where alot of drinkers go to pass out, puke, piss and fuck. Also, get to know David Hasslehoff songs - they seem to love that bastard.

I've been several times. I'm eternally thankful I'm not going this year. I sincerely hope a gang of soccer holligans kicks you into a coma.

With my master race blue eyes, blond hair, and (apparently according to drunk Germans at Loreley in NYC), German features, I should blend right in and be welcomed back to the fatherland.

Better claim you're Canadian.

Make your reservations NOW for next year. Things tend to book up fast.
A friend of mine from grade school went while she had a study-abroad year in college and it comes highly recommended, but it is definitely something that books up/sells out FAST.

There's really only a need to rush if someone is determined to be staying basically right on top of the festivities. Remember, Germany is a beneficiary of the kickass European rail system we can only wish we had, so someone can easily stay in, say, Berlin instead of Munich and just take the train down and back. I'd argue that that's actually more fun since you can basically bring a freakin' keg on the train and just get sloshed with your friends on the way down.

I've been. I may head back next year for 200, too.
Make sure you try the tent that serves oxen.
And don't attempt to ride the Fransinkaner carousel bar when you're drunk.
The one thing that really does sell out in advance are the nightime tent tickets, esp. Fri & Sat. Sneaking in isn't as easy as you think it would be. The smaller (less popular) tents usually have space, so you're not going to get completely shut out.
What else you need to know?

The hotel we booked is a 5 minute walk to Theresienwiese, the second and final weekends were booked already so I had to jump on the first before it was too late. It's a year in advance so I am not even thinking about plane tickets or what else we'll do while there. Everyone should come, will be a Deutch Ron and Fez meet up.
For the ticket thing for the tents, I know there is the whole reservation thing that goes on with them, but how does that work? If we want to go to one of the crazy ones, like the Hippodrom, do the tickets guarantee you a spot in them during a certain time or do you just hope that you can get in? From what I have been reading the nutty Germans get there at noon and hold the same tables late into the night and just drink all day. If I want to go to one of them in the evening does getting a ticket mean I will get in?

Maybe. A ticket usually gets you in but it by no means you'll have a seat or even room to do much of anything. As you heard, those tents often get crazy packed even with the ticket system.

All we need are 10 ron fez dot netters to go to Germany next year and we can reserve a full table at any of the tents. With us two going that means only 8 more.
So who's in?

My wife (german) went to Munich a few years ago to settle some family affairs. It happened to be the last weekend of Octoberfest when she arrived there. She claims to have never seen more drunk people in one place in her life.

my wife went in 06 and said there were more people than she had ever seen before, I imagine that means that hotel reservations are VERY important. With somewhat relaxed alcohol related laws you could probably just pass out on a grassy field and be ok

If you have never been to Germany you are in for a great trip. I was there for 3 weeks in August, it is a beautiful country with beatiful beers

For this trip I plan on going nowhere but Oktoberfest in Munich. Don't care about the castles, the countryside, the culture, just beer, sausages, and lederhosen for 3 days. I have been to Germany when I was younger and I remember seeing some stuff, but for this trip the entire purpose is beer.
After three days I am off to Paris by train.

Try to pick up a English-German translation book? Although a majority do speak english, it is appreciated if you try to butcher their language first. Seriously, I'm fluent in German, yet with a hangover orders my Coffee with teeth and sugar. The hotel staff found my mix up in word use amusing and always Englished at me in the morning after that. *shrug* Do you have any food squimishes? I'd avoid the people that try to get you to eat goat eyeballs. Have fun!

Yeah, I am quite limited with what I eat (http://www.ronfez.net/forums/showthread.php?t=69728) so I am pretty worried about what I will have besides the basics.
