This is Roger Ebert's list but it seems pretty solid
1. Hoop Dreams (1994)
2. Pulp Fiction (1994)
3. Goodfellas (1990)
4. Fargo (1996)
5. Three Colors: Red, White and Blue
6. Schindler's List (1993)
7. Breaking the Waves (1996)
8. Leaving Las Vegas (1995)
9. Malcolm X (1992)
10. JFK (1991).

3 colors is really 3 movies. they are foreign but were really good
breaking waves is about a couple who explores her sexuality when he becomes a cripple

I'd have to have seven on my list for the 90s, and maybe kids or clerks, glory, as mentioned shawshank.
Not my fave, but just movies I think of from that time.

These lists always shy away from SciFi, comedies, and (very often) Blockbusters. I always find that odd.

syfy is just the channel. for books they prefer sf nowadays. i believe scifi is still ok for movies.
the matrix
the usual suspects
fight club
american beauty
the professional
fargo
reservoir dogs
tombstone
seven
the fifth element
i can see people giving me hell for the fifth element, but i just love that movie. just missing the cut were the sixth sense (i don't know how re-watchable it is after you know the gimmick) and twelve monkeys. also, i always thought memento was 1999, but it's showing as 2000. oh, well. so glad shawshank missed his list. most over-rated movie ever to me.

So you're saying it's impossible for anyone to like Hoop Dreams for any reason besides the acclaim it received from critics? Or any other film that is critically acclaimed?

Yeah, so? I read a lot of different reviews. You do realize it's possible to do that and then actually have your own opinion based on what you watch/listen to, right? I read reviews generally to get an idea of what I want to avoid altogether and not waste my time on.

Yeah, nobody has to like it, but to just dismiss it as "blowing chunks" is ridiculous. It's easy to not like something personally but still recognize how it's a good film.

Oh, I definitely pile on the hyperbole, but usually it's over something that I genuinely think is bad (the Transformers, etc.) and it's not hard to argue that it is. Something like, say, the LotR films I can't stand but I totally see how they're very well made and acted films and why people love them.
And yes, I "get" why people love Van Morrison. I just like being a jerk.
This is why Ebert is the gold standard for film critics.
That Rotten Tomatoes dork can suck my balls.

I decided to take the challenge and pick the best movie of each year of the '90s.
1990: Goodfellas (come on)
1991: Barton Fink
1992: Unforgiven
1993: Schindler's List
1994: Pulp Fiction
1995: Crumb
1996: Fargo
1997: L.A. Confidential
1998: Dark City
1999: Fight Club
The hardest year to pick here? 1999. We've heard what a great year that was, but when I look down the list, I see a bunch of movies that are really deeply flawed when you think about them. So I went with the movie from that year I like best.
