Ya, that's why I'm asking. I don't want them to ruin the cartoon. Oh yea, Ripcord suppose to be white, so right there they suck.

I ended up having to see this Friday night and went into it expecting absolute garbage and....it wasn't nearly as bad as I was expecting.

Don't get me wrong, it's still dumb as fuck, but it's a fun and entertaining dumb as fuck that doesn't take itself too seriously a la Bayformers. In terms of summer blockbusters, the only other one I saw that was more watchable was Star Trek. When I found out that the director was the guy that made The Mummy it explained a lot since it's very much along the lines of that film in terms of being really dumb but still very entertaining.

And "ruin the cartoon?" Are you fucking kidding me? The cartoon was a piece of shit commercial for toys. A movie this stupid is still too good for it.

I saw it friday night. I went in expecting it to be really lame, and it actually wasn't bad. The movie used a LOT of technology that is currently being developed and have been talked about (invisibility cloaks, nanomites, etc). I thought it was really cool. They stayed a little bit close to the stories laid out for characters in teh comic book. There was some pretty cool action sequences. I was actually stunned by the amount of violence and death and cursing in the movie, moreso than I thought.

Major problems were with plot holes and wtf moments about how certain situations could have been prevented or came up at all. The plot was made for children though, so it was entertaining to them.

In closing, I would definitely pick this movie up on bluray just for how awesome the action sequences would look on a big hd tv. It's popcorn fun like the Mummy movies.

Who gives a shit? They were stupid toys. How is "Ripcord" (AKA anonymous GI Joe #472) being black somehow a bad thing? It's the same nobody character but with different skin color. What's the difference?

It's one thing if a character's race or religion or whatever is inherrent to their character, but this is just some random action figure idiot who jumps out of planes. Who gives a fuck if he's white or black?

If "Ripcord" is "engrained into your childhood memories" then you had a really boring childhood.

whats next? will smith as 007 ?

Well, he's not British.

That said, at this point it really wouldn't matter if James Bond was black so long as he was British. It would be one thing if the stories were still set in the Cold War, but since they're all modern day and they have next to no carryover from film to film there's really reason Bond couldn't be black. A specific race isn't critical to his character at this point.

I kinda liked it. I guess I was in a mood for dumb fun. I was a devout fan of the toys and the cartoons growing up. I enjoyed seeing the characters and the fantastically advanced weaponry realized on the big screen in live action. I wouldn't necessarily deem it a good movie - the storytelling becomes horribly unfocused after the midway point - but I don't regret going and I can see myself buying the blu ray.

I don't consider actually being able to discuss it is "beating it to death."

Besides, I didn't bring it up. Someone else here brought up the idea of a minor GI Joe character going from white to black as if that was a bad thing and I wanted to hash out why that perception exists.

Which confused the hell out of me, since the old cartoon seemed to totally imply he was black but the comic always said he was Scottish.

More like G I Blow!!!

I've never seen the incarnation that you kiddies know - the toys or the cartoons.

It was after my time.

From what I've heard Dave describe, however, it sounds like S.H.I.E.L.D. vs. Hydra from Marvel Comics.

What's so original about that?

They were doing those story lines before I was born.

The GI Joe comic put out by Marvel in the early 80's was actually just a reconfigured SHIELD relaunch proposal that had been scrapped.

The movie builds up to the formation of the COBRA organization at the end. These characters come along after COBRA is formed.

If there's a sequel, I'd fully expect to see these guys in it.
