I'm working on a project regarding dog attacks. I want to compile videos from youtube regarding this subject. What is the best way (free or otherwise) to download and convert these files, that would result in the least lossy conversion for Windows Media Player? These videos will need to play on a variety of computers that I will not be able to download codecs or alternative players on.

If you have Mozilla, get a youtube downloader ad on. The couple I've tried work great. To convert them, I use Any Video Converte (http://www.any-video-converter.com/products/for_video_free/)r.

Mediaconverter.org will let you convert it to an avi or wmv file. you can do up to 5 a day for free though.
just go to the site and copy the url where it asks to enter a link and follow from there.

google youtube downloader.. the downside of downloading from youtube is that its somewhat degraded audio/video. Youtube downloader lets you download videos as a .flv file then you can convert it to mp3, avi or wmv and other formats.. it is free

Google videos (Google owns youtube so its about the same)
Some have download links under details tab near bottom.
Hit show more info if you dont see it.
These are mp4 and with any luck will play with out needing to convert.
Here is one that has it.
