Why did keyboards from the 80's and 90's click?

back in the 1900s we liked keyboards that clicked cuz they reminded us of the clicking sound you used to get when you listened to the earpiece of a rotary phone when you were dialin someone

I still use a keyboard like that at work, and they still give them to all the new locations. Either my company stockpiled a shit ton of these things, or they keep them around because the "Enter" key is where the control key usually is, and where the "enter" key usually is says "return" and only makes a newline.

The one at work is for our IBM System i thin-client, I also have one at home for my old IBM ps/2

That clicking made the movie War Games more interesting.

BAM

I've seen garbage bins full of these, but someone has been selling them to dollar stores in New York. Can't imagine who would buy a dusty PS/2 kb except for the click.

The weird thing about those old keyboards: They were dishwasher-safe. No joke.
