I'm jacking this from a Facebook "notes" thing going around.

List 50 concerts, from memory, that you have seen. I personally only listed headliners, since I could probably take care of all 50 with 3 or 4 festivals. If you need to use openers or festival acts to fill in, go ahead. Make sure to put the first concert you went to as #1.

4. Prince
5. TV on the Radio
6. The Roots
7. Mos Def and Talib Kweli

I only did the headliners. Including opening acts and non-headliners from festivals I'm probably in the 100s.

I can't believe people have seen this many concerts.

Live music is amazing.

My wife and I were attempting to go to 50 shows this year, but I think we're going to miss our goal.

first of all, great thread.

I'm also amazed/concerned by how I had completely forgotten about a couple of my favorite concerts. there are a couple that I went a long to, like Beth Orton and M Ward, that I would replace with ones that I really enjoyed. A couple of years ago I saw Secret Machines and members of Faust play at the Bowery Ballroom. If I could edit, I would take about B Orton or M Ward and put that one in.

Oh shit, I forgot the best one of my life - J Giles Band. I saw them in Spokane, where I grew up, around 1981. They would not leave the stage. I have never seen a band put so much into a concert. I lost track of the encores and I think the crowd started to leave before the band did.

People are always shocked when I tell them that J. Geils was one of the best shows I'd ever seen. Your story is similar to mine - the encores ended up being as long as the regular set.

Another shockingly good show from the early 80's was Rod Stewart. I HAAAAAAATED anything he recorded after around '75, but with the exception of Do Ya Think I'm Sexy he didn't play any of that crap. It was all early 70's Faces and solo stuff.

Good to hear you had a similar experience. The other day either Ron or Gvac mentioned how great J. Geils was and it brought back great memories. I was a snotty little heavy metal kid at the time and went because my girlfriend like Peter Wolf's song about seeing his ex in Penthouse. I was prepared to hate it but was floored. I had recently seen Van Halen on their Diver Down tour and Rush on their Permanent Waves tour and there was no comparison. J. Geils was more rock n' roll than those bands put together.

Some more that I missed, now that I'm home and have my stubs in front of me (yes, I save my stubs):

Sonic Youth, Alanis Morrisette, Eminem, Roni Size, Oasis, Spinal Tap, Rancid (x2), Brassy, Nonpoint, Gorillaz (x2), Korn, Jon Spencer Blues Explosion, Phantom Planet, Datsuns, North Mississippi All Stars, Gaelic Storm, Type O Negative, Dr. John, Linkin Park, Little Brother (x2), Danger Mouse & Jemini, Dizzee Rascal, Iron Maiden, Dave Liebman Quartet, Gnarls Barkley.

That gets me up to 75 or so. Again, headliners only. No opening acts or any bands from festivals other than the headliners. Plus shows where my tickets were will call and I have no stub...

A million local bands too

Please indulge my intro -

During my formative childhood years in the '60s, my father owned a local radio station. Consequently, we had stacks of 45's around the house (I vividly recall they were all stamped 'for promotional use only, not for sale). I used to play them stacked up on one of those old mono record players, with a huge thick plastic spindle in the middle as big as your arm. Every type of music you can imagine - I loved it all.

For my tenth birthday, I got just what I wanted - a transistor radio of my own, which I listened to for years, taking it with me everywhere. School. The beach. To bed (hiding under the covers and listening way too late at night, just like in the Ramones song). Everywhere.

All this paled in comparison to my discovery of live music at the age of thirteen or fourteen. I attended my first concert - a 'battle of the bands' at the local junior high school. I was bowled over by the live experience - the excitement, the rush, the intimacy and connection - THE VOLUME. I literally FELT the music buffeting me as I stood in front of the amplifiers for the first time.

Needless to say, this set me down a lifelong path of live music in concert. I've seen most of the performers and artists I wanted to see live - missed a few I'll always regret (Zeppelin, Nirvana, Sinatra)... and lots I've seen many times over; starting with my first - David Bowie on the Diamond Dogs tour. And I still feel the same excitement with every show I attend.

I could easily expand this list a few times over... but here are 50 concerts I've seen:

David Bowie
Elvis (yes, I said The King)
Neil Young
Bob Dylan
Devo
Ramones
Rolling Stones
Blue Oyster Cult
The Cramps
Butthole Surfers
Sparks
Public Image Limited
The Clash
AC/DC (with Bon Scott)
