This just in...
John Hughes has died of a heart attack.
Hughes suffered the heart attack while taking a morning walk during a trip to NYC to visit family.
He directed such '80s hit films as "The Breakfast Club," "Pretty in Pink," "Sixteen Candles" and "Ferris Bueller's Day Off."
He was 59.

I was talking about his films yesterday with some friends and wondering why he hadn't made anything in so long. Guess the wait is going to be a little longer...it's odd that he basically stopped working in the film industry outside of scattered production and writing credits over the last 18 years. Maybe he was battling illness for a lot of that time?

he still wrote and produces a ton in recent years. don't know why he stopped directing.
Sixteen Candles, Breakfast Club, Weird Science, Ferris Bueller's Day Off, Planes, Trains & Automobiles, She's Having a Baby, Uncle Buck, Curly Sue. That's his credits.
5 classics in a row and Uncle Buck. Nice career.

Not at all. All of the writing credits in the last decade save for a single film are just credits for the screenplay being based off a story of his or credits for creating characters being used in a sequel. He probably wrote the outlines or basic story or whatever before he "retired." He's only got one actual screepnplay credit post 1998 and that was in 2001. Same thing with production credits. He stopped directing after 1991 (and seemingly only wrote kids movies after that) and then basically stopped everything, directing or writing or producing after 1998. Odd.

Bethany: What exactly brought you to Illinois?
Jay: Some fuck named John Hughes.
Bethany: "Sixteen Candles" John Hughes?
Jay: You know that guy, too? See, all these movies take place in a small town called Shermer, in Illinois, where all the honies are top-shelf, but all the dudes are whiny pussies - except for Judd Nelson, he was fuckin' harsh - but best of all, there was no one dealin', man; then, it hits me: we could live like phat rats if we were the blunt connection in Shermer, Illinois. So we collected some money we were owed, and we caught a bus. You know what the fuck we found out when we got there? There is no Shermer in Illinois. Movies are fuckin' bullshit.

I don't even have a job. But I know a good kid when I see one. Because they're ALL good kids, until dried-out, brain-dead skags like you drag them down and convince them they're no good. You so much as scowl at my niece, or any other kid in this school, and I hear about it, and I'm coming looking for you! Take this quarter, go downtown, and have a rat gnaw that thing off your face! Schooner Tuna. The Tuna With A Bad Heart
From a fellow alumni,
I'm not going to joke (much). I went to Glenbrook North high school, the same school John Hughes went to. My high school experience wasn't like John Hughes' experience. I never got Saturday detention (or any detention) but I know people who did. We didn't have Ferris Bueller in school (I did know him though) but there were lots of spoiled kids who could get a car at will and ditch school. But I knew exactly what he was talking about and where he was talking about. And when you can say you went to the school Pretty in Pink, 16 Candles, Ferris Bueler's Day Off, and Breakfast Club was based on, that is cool. And when you got to walk past the set of Uncle Buck every day on your way to school, that is cool too (even if my parents thought the day John Candy was coming to meet kids at my school was the ideal day to do a daddy-daughter day at work and I missed my chance). And I got to drive through fake snow when only the lonely was being filmed, and see the home alone house, and see my local train and grocery in She's Having a Baby. Well, that is pretty cool too. So from someone who lived down the street from your family, is a fellow alumni of your high school, and is now gainfully employed in the entertainment field herself-Rest in peace and you're the man.
PS.-To Kevin Smith Fans, in Dogma they mention Shermertown not being a real place. True, Shermertown was based on Shermerville, which was renamed Northbrook, IL (about a half hour from Chicago-and Molly's cupcakes)
