The opening scene of Saving Private Ryan is the pretty obvious answer. it's perfect.
But I also loved The Bride vs the Crazy 88 if you count that as a battle scene.

I'm not going to say the best but I do really enjoy the last scene in Way of the Gun, also the slow car chase scene when they abduct Juliette lewis.

The battle scene in "Anchorman" - " Yeah, there were horses, and a man on fire, and I killed a guy with a trident".

Saving Private Ryan's opening scene is great. I enjoy the Gladiator opening scene as well.
There's a couple I can pick from Band of Brothers...the entire Albert Blithe episode for one (Carentan), and the artillery barrages in the later episodes involving Bastogne.
I'm a huge fan of the movie When Trumpets Fade, and that had a couple fantastic sequences.
But as far as my personal favourites, i'm gonna have to go with the ending of Zulu, and the Viktor Grabner scene in A Bridge Too Far.

I'll throw in a vote for the battle sequence of The Crater from Cold Mountain.
The rest of that movie was dogshit, but The Crater scene was fantastic

Hellz yes. Great little movie that tends to be forgotten since it was made for HBO. It's really impressive how good it is and looks given that its budget was like a fraction of most war films these days.

I think when the boys were talkinga bout this, they meant battle between armies or two large group of forces. We're not talking about fight scenes such as one person taking on a group of people.

So epic. Those clips don't even really do it justice since the hospital scene is, what, half an hour long? It's insane. And the tea house sequence...Jesus Christ, what a way to open a film.

I can't find video of it, but Musa the Warrior had some sick battle scene, particularly the "Last Stand"

I thought it was too... UNTIL! Until I saw the Mythbusters that busted the myth of being shot by bullets underwater. They fired up to 50 cal. bullets point blank into water and unless you're right under the surface of the water, the bullet shatters when it hits the water and you'll be safe. There were a few scenes of guys getting shot under a few feet of water and I don't think that is possible.
Same thing in Pearl Harbor. Terrible movie, but the bombing of Pearl Harbor is a crazy scene. Again, it has guys getting shot underwater.

Not sure if it fits into the thread but the end of the Road Warrior is surely the best moving battle of all time.

Correct me if i'm wrong, but didn't the Normandy Landings take place at low tide? That would mean the water was pretty shallow?

Good point, and although I don't know the answer to that off the top of my head, my point was just that men were shown shot who were underwater a few feet, far enough to be safe from bullet fire.
But it's just a nitpick, as the whole scene is a great battle scene.

Based on the MB episode that wouldn't matter since they were shooting into the shallow end of a pool and the SPR scene was definitely deeper water.
It's nitpicky, but even when I saw SPR in theaters that seemed pretty ridiculous.

Almost the entire movie 300. SPR opening yes, almost all the Band of Brothers battles yes, Lord of the rings TT, yes. I also like the end of The Gauntlet with Clint Eastwood. The movie is eh, but that last scene was nuts.

Best "BATTLE" scene in a movie, not "best pre-ass fucking foreplay."

I don't know about "best" battle scene but... some serious shit went down in Oliver Stone's ALEXANDER.
Whenever animals get killed, slaughtered, and/or wounded... it feels a bit more gruesome to me.

No one thinks Braveheart has some top notch battle scenes?
I'd take the river scene in Thin Red Line over anything in Saving Private Ryan. I met the guy who did the military consulting on SPR (while it was being filmed no less). He's a bit of an actor now, too.

Was that Dale Dye? Seems like that guy does the military consulting for EVERYTHING.
Braveheart was just "meh" to me. I was too distracted by the bad history, and the terrible editing. There's one scene in particular where Gibson's Wallace is charging with an axe, then without one, then with one again.
I haven't seen Thin Red Line in a LONG time...I've got to get that again on Netflix.
Speaking of World War Two movies, not only was Letters From Iwo Jima VASTLY superior to Flags of Our Fathers, there were a ton of amazing scenes in that picture.
