I just had my laptop reformatted and I'm trying to connect to a wireless network and its not working.

A screen pops up and asks for the network key which I got from my neighbor. When I put it in it says it has to be 40 bits or 104 bits and can be entered as 5 or 13 ascii characters or 10 or 26 hexadecimal characters.

When I click on advanced and try to configure I put the 10 digit key in, it says the character on position 2 in the WEP is not a hexidecimal digit.

I figured because it was a 10 digit key it would be a 10 character hexi digits. What am I doing wrong?

I'm no wiz with networks. The only suggestion I have is make sure you don't use caps lock when entering the key.

Tried it lower and upper case. Same result.

It has to be upper case, but you can't use caps lock. You have to hit shift with each one.

Tried that too.

Well. You need to select either WEP or WPA/WPA2 with TKIP. It sounds to me like you friend is using a Pre-Shared Key, which can be simple characters (not hex or ascii). You need to enter the advanced section of the settings and select these options.

What version of Windows are you running? Are you using Windows wireless to connect or somthing like Dell's or another manufacturers Wifi software?

If your friend is smart he uses WPA and as Geno state you have TKIP for personal use. Enterprise uses a different kind of WPA key.

You may either not have the selection created correctly when configuring it for wireless or it is possible that you do not have the correct wireless driver loaded on the lappy.

Are you trying to connect to ronfez.net? Because that could be your problem.

So I checked the properties of the network on my girlfriends computer and it is a wpa2 psk connection and has an aes key. When I try to configure the connection on mine it says it is a wireless network key (wep) with no option to change it to a wpa2. How do I go about changing this?

What kind of router is it, plus the version (which is located on the bottom)?

What make/model is the laptop?

Upgraded router firmware?

Once I know this I can better help.

WEP is fairly worthless because of how easy it is to crack.
