I'm torn when it comes to this subject. The hip hop I grew up with is certainly dead, but that doesn't mean that the whole genre is dead. When I was really into punk all the older punks would say, "punk is dead" because of bands like NOFX and Rancid. Now I think punk is dead because of Fallout Boy and Good Charlotte. Let the kids enjoy their hip hop the way we enjoyed ours. If Busta Rhymes and the Fugees could have gotten rich off of ringtones back in the day, they would have.

Why is hip hop the only genre that gets bashed for talking about stupid subject matter? Nobody said Hey Motley Crue is ruining music when they made Girls,Girls,Girls but if Young Money makes Every Girl they're destroying hip hop.

Yeah, good movie but it falls prey to Lee's biggest fault: most of the time he can't figure out how to end a film to save his life.
And this whole "hip-hop is dead" thing can be applied to pretty much every popular musical genre if you look at a certain way. Yeah, most of the chart topping stuff is very shallow and superficial, but there's tons of great hip-hop out there. Focusing on the charts is a terrible way to judge any genre since most of the time the stuff on the charts is made to be as "safe" and as widely popular as possible.
Plus NaS stinks these days. He made one the greatest albums ever in any genre and it's all been downhill from there.

Mainstream hip hop IS dead.
You have to look underground to find music that didn't stray from the sound at about 1995.
If you look at the reviews at http://www.hiphopsite.com , they usually give good reviews to find some new good albums, check "in the deck".
There were a bunch of good albums released this year.
Blaq Poet - The Blaqprint
Brother Ali - The Truth

I have to agree Ghostface has put out some great albums, along with Bun-B, Scarface, Jay-Z always comes through and even Twista.. But what counts as great or good hip-hop to us is so different than what these kids are listing to now and it's sad that that a song like Your a jerk by the New boyz will get more air play than something by Jadakiss right now..

Yeah, about half of TBP is really solid and the rest is just filler and an obvious cash crab. It's a really killer EP dressed up as an LP. As a whole it's a huge dropoff from LUDP&D.
And fuck Eminem. Gang Starr's lyrical shout out to Big L is so much better:

As far as the hip hop is dead arguement, I could write a small dissertation about how I feel about what was and what has come to pass, but I'm to lazy to do that right now. I reflect most of what's been said here, and I believe hip hop is not dead, it's just a little harder to find.

i agree with most of what's been said here. hip hop really pulled an AF (air france) since 97. there have been some great break outs, but for the most part, yeck.
i also agree with mojo-poo that there is great hip hop out there, you just have to look for it. forget what they play on air, its watered down garbage meant to appeal to Morty in the 'burbs and appease Jamal in tha bronx.
that being said, start digging. there are tons of blogs and fanzines (do they still have them) where you can read up on new cats you aint never heard spit.

The old school stuff I like.
None of those artist have made any more new stuff from back in the day.
(that I know of)
So I would say It has been dead & buried
Also gansta rap is killing any remaining elements of hip hop.
As well as new r&b. There is no need for a lady r&b's tune to have some thug at the start of every song.

It's hilarious that people act like this still some musical fad that's going to go away any day now.
Hip-hop's been around over 30 years at this point. It's not going anywhere.

I can't stand that repetitive nonsense either... it's always verse chorus verse bridge solo chorus OUT. Goddamn all this noise!
Can we also stop pretending that the 'good stuff' is hidden away. There is plenty of hip-hop on the radio that is worthwhile. I'm willing to bet you guys, you underground purists and general know-it-alls, don't even listen to hip-hop radio. Hot97 in NYC, for all the pumping of the same few summertime jams, will always throw in some new hot stuff. There are people running those stations that LOVE hip-hop.
Perhaps the content of the underground vs. the radio hip-hop is different, but both are valid and both can demonstrate great flow, production, and sense of place in history. These are important things - not units sold, or the number of whites who have accepted an artist. MF Doom - isn't that great. I've seen him.

Yeah I heard that about Doom. I thought it was Doom at the time but then again it was at my old college - do you think the real Doom shows up to campus parties?

Raekwon the chef is cooking with straight fire! OB4CL2 is astonishingly good.
3 Dilla Tracks, 2 Rza racks, 2 Dre Tracks, most of clan guests on the record, there's an ODB tribute.
If you want to sample the goods I suggest "10 Bricks", "Black Mozart", or "House of Flying Daggers".
Here is a SWEET fan vid for House of Flying Daggers

Now lets stop pretending Hip-hop is dying. If anything it's just watered down due to its overwhelming popularity in todays youth culture.

I was JUST talking about this on another board.
GREAT fucking album. Everyone's talking about Jay-Z this week, but Rae's dropped a classic with this one. I love it.

Jay's album is good. I really am enjoying it - my only complaint is that a good deal of his guests are WEAK. Drake?? Really? Overall I'm satisfied by Jay's album but, Rae was swinging for the fences!

YES. I've had the Raekwon album for a couple weeks now and I still went out and bought it the day it came out, it's that fucking great. I can't wait for Ghost's album at the end of this month.

I like that the internet has allowed for this new system where an album is valid if we're willing to pay for it. Since Napster I haven't bought an album until I know it's fully worth it's asking price. I guess in the past you could have tape of a tape, or borrow a friends copy but more often then not, I was buying stuff based on one video on 120 mins and a hot single on the pop charts.
The point is if I go out and give someone money for music - I'm now saying "yes, I stand by this record". Feels better then saying "Yes, I consume in a random and short-shighted manner."

Pretty much. Same with movies I'm unsure about, too.
