I have a 720p Toshiba LCD HDTV that occasionally when I switch channels or bring up a menu, or On Demand, goes black and the sound shuts off. if I shut the TV off and then power it back on all is good. It really is a pain in the ass.

I have had Comcast, Dish Network, and now Verizon FiOS and had the problem with all 3. This leads me to believe it's a setting on my TV, or a setting I should adjust on the HD box.

Has anyone had this happen or found a fix for it?

A buddy of mine has a Sony and had the same problem but ignores it.

Sorry, I can't help you but I have had issues with my Samsung DLP. It's been working perfectly for awhile now and was fine when we first got it but all of a sudden it started turning itself off. It would shut down and either not let us turn it back on or we could turn it on, it would shut off after 5 minutes and so on and so on. It got so bad we almost threw it out and got a new one. Hasn't done it in at least 6 months so it's all good again!

Weird.

Yeah but the screen turns black, sound goes out but the backlight is on and the power LED is still green.

Same thing happens w/ my LCD in my bedroom. Sometimes the sound goes out and I have to turn it on then off again.

I have one minor problem with my setup. My cable box and TV are hooked via HDMI through my receive, and the majority of the time it works perfectly. Sometimes, though, when I switch from a HD channel to a non-HD channel I'll just get audio on the non-HD channel. If I click the receiver to another input (bluray, slingbox, etc.) the picture will finally show up when I return to the cable input.

Depends on how your audio/video is hooked up. You can experience lag/slowness with HDMI cables when switching channels, specially between Standard Definition to High Definition. If it is Component, have you tried another pair of component cables or a different component jack on the back of the TV?

This could also be indicative of an issue with your cable box/digital box. Have you tried pulling the power from your cable box, letting it sit for 60 seconds, then plugging it back in? You can call your cable company, tell them about the lag when switching channels/blackness/loss of signal. They can run tests to your box to see if diagnostics check out. They can also dispatch out a tech to check your lines in for noise/snags.

Could be a plethora of issues. I would check first with the cables then move from there.

I'd answer with the problem is overheating. I have seen the problem in older LCD monitors.

Dust builds up because top vents of the panel allow dust to settle inside the case. The dust acts as insulation causing heat to build up, and the panel in a fit of protection shuts off components.

If you are comfortable, lay the panel face down on a large towel or sheet, remove the backing only, and blow it out with compressed air.

In some counties that will get you time if she is under 16.

If this helps, I have a 1080p Samsung that started losing HDMI signal while playing my Xbox 360. The screen would just go to blue, and I would have no video/audio and a message about "Unsupported format" or something else. It ended up being a problem with my LCD's motherboard. I had a service plan with Best Buy, they RMA'ed me a new board, and a Best Buy representative came out and replaced my old one. Haven't have a problem since.

I would just call Fez's brother. He could fix any TV.

That, and always spray at an angle and not straight on. At an angle blows the dust away from clean components while straight on blows it all over the place.

Thanks buddies. I think for the most part you made me feel better that it's not a problem that would involve me replacing the TV..

A few people at y office have had the same problem and pretty much just ignore it.

I think I'll try blowing the back out with compressed air when I get a chance.

that's what i was gonna mention. sometimes when i switch from a standard def channel to a high def channel, the audio doesn't work, and i have to flip channels a few times to get it working.

also, i've noticed that if i'm getting choppy video on a high def channel (like during a bad storm or whatever), standard def channels are usually less affected.

I know this is the standard non-helpful answer to all audio/video problems, but check your connections. I had one HD channel that I had all sorts of problems with, both audio and video-wise. Every other channel played fine. Unhooking the cable and cleaning off the end and the connection on the box cleared it up.

I tend to notice that older tv's that were the first line of tv's to get HDMI connections tend to have more problems with it. They keep mucking with the HDMI signal and standards that it is tough to keep up.

I will say that if you have a service plan, I would definitely get a check up. It won't hurt if they have to replace just the board inside. Unless if they "replace it with the same or similar" product. I would never do that, seeing that I put TONS of time and research into the tv I wanted. And my Samsung was on the market and removed due to a design change (the outer shell), but is much better than the model(s) that replaced it.

Also, some TVs have a USB plugin on them that will allow you to update the firmware by downloading the updated version from the manufacturer's website. This could fix problems BUT if you don't know what you are doing you can really end up "bricking" your tv and screwing it up big time. BIG warning if you go this path

Yup first thng I did was triple check all connections. even adding the components 1 at a time as I went along.
