This is more of a rant than anything. I like to come to this particular forum and help out but then when it's me I want to throw the computer over the balcony or in the pool while it's running.
My 1 year old (just out of warranty) Lenovo lappy shit the bed over the weekend. Now, Lenovo is supposed to be a good lappy manufacturer having bought IBM, all their knowledge, and own the same plants and techs that made the IBM Thinkpad so renowned. So, I blame Hitachi, the manufacturer of the fucking hard drive in my lappy for pissing me off.
This would not be so bad if I did not have all my tools, tricks, and SNs loaded up on the lappy. Backup you ask, why yes I do but why would I want to carry a fleet of CD/DVDs around everywhere I go to fix a computer when I could tote the lappy? Also, in single and multi licenses I would then have to install the software on the other person's affected computer invalidating my single or multi-user licenses. It is so much easier to take control of the affected computer and run your tools to figure out the tough problems. Yes, some of my software is "cracked" and easy to install on another computer but then you waste fucking valuable drinking in your boxers time in your own home.
So the problem?
Windows would not load when I tried to start the lappy on sunday. I immediately jump into diagnostic mode and log into my BIOS. No problems. I try a Mint (Ubuntu) basically live boot CD, I can see my file system. I try every possible way to boot this mother fucker and panic. I had a house call to make Tuesday night and my mom's computer here next to me in line to be fixed. Well, I start going through the process of elimination of systems on this lappy. At least 10 hours spent Monday into Tuesday morning, so I was very sleepy at my doctor's appointment and got very little accomplished Tuesday evening other than a nap. Well, turns out that everything I tried points to the HD failing. This sucks.
My 4-5 year old Acer lappy with Ubuntu loaded is starting to shit the bed and BIOS is forgeting how and which drive to boot to. Last week I tore it apart to replace a battery. Now, many of my tools are Windows based because family/friends all run Windows. I'm fucked.
Time to order a new HD if I have the extra dough this month, mean while I have this non-clonable drive on this $1k lappy staring me in the face. Next time I head up to the property this HD is going up on the shooting range.
I did drink a bit, on to 4 am or so but that did not make the problem any more fun.
I did drop the f-bomb a few more times than usual, maybe even woke my neighbors.
I also smoked a pack of cigs, had not done that in awhile.
