View Full Version : Bands That Got Big After They Broke Up

So I was bored on my way to work this morning and this random question popped into my head...

Are there any bands that blew up after the band broke up (or in the case of a single artist, quit music). I can think of hundreds of bands that got bigger after they broke up, but were successful when they were a band.

Nirvana. Not after a break up. But I think they really blew up and went mainstream after kurt was dead.

Um, no.

They were at their biggest when Nevermind ruled the charts.

Yes, there was a resurgence when Kurt died, but it never approached what had previously happened.

Candlebox, maybe?

Although, i hear they do have a new album coming out, so maybe not technically broken up.

I'd agree...same with Big Star.

Maybe even the Pixies.

I call bullshit on this.

You would have tweeted this if you were bored.

This is you pretending that you still care about RonFez.net because it is being mentioned on the air today.

Definitely Big Star.

I'd say the MC5 got most of their acclaim after they were gone.

Gram Parsons.

Gram Parsons is probably the best example I've yet seen.

Another one going way back could be the Zombies. They recorded Oddyssey and Oracle, but broke up before it was released. The album initially bombed, but when "Time of the Season" became a hit in the US they reunited.

Sublime.

Blind Melon's first album was their biggest success by far, well before the lead singer died and the band broke up, what, 2 albums later?

Yeah, I was just going to post that. 99% of all their sales was long before he died.

Candlebox had a huge hit with You
Sublime were successful before Brad died. Daterape got a huge amount of airplay.

I'd agree with Mother Love Bone. They never really got national attention until after Pearl Jam broke and people saw them as the band before PJ.

The first Candelbox album is great imo.
Maybe it takes awhile for the money to get to the artist.
And thats what I'm going on. From what I heard it was like the next day that a 1 mil. contract was offered after Bradley had passed away.

2 bands that come to mind are Love and Television. Seems like every hip artist credits one of those bands as an influence. But maybe they were "big" in their day. I dont know. I wasnt there.

define "big".

Basically sold nothing when they were around, actually sold something after they were gone plus became reference points creatively and "cool"-wise.
