View Full Version : Renew Norton?
So this morning I got a message from my computer:
Norton 360:
Check your subscription: 1 Day Remaining. Renew now to ensure continued protection.
Since I bought my computer 60 days ago, this would be accurate.
So my question to those with knowledge would be....Do I renew Norton or what the heck should I do?

Uninstall Norton and get Avast! (http://download.cnet.com/Avast-Home-Edition/3000-2239_4-10019223.html?tag=mncol)

Norton is waaaay too expensive.
Also i've been using this other one McAfee for my computer's, and I believe it's cheaper and it basically does the same job.

There's actually a Norton Removal Tool you can download to completely wipe it off your system.

Norton is an inefficient pain. I use AVG free (http://free.avg.com/) for virus detection and adaware (http://www.lavasoft.com/) for ad cookies and spyware. As stated above, Avast is great!
Just because Norton comes pre-installed does not mean there is a need for it.

Norton is overpriced because many virus writers write their virii in a way to get past Norton due to its install base size.

I have Norton for my iMac, and I wonder if Avast is good for that too. Anyone know? I just got a Macbook.

I thought Macs didn't need anti-virus software.

I was just about to post the same link. The removal tool normally works very well.
Get rid of Norton. Like others who posted above, I use Avast. It is a great product and it is free for home users.
If you are really intent on spending money, I would go with ESET Nod32. We use it on our company owned computers and it works very well. It doesn't eat up system resources and is solid protection.

I'm using Symantec Endpoint protection on Vista and AVG on 7. SEP is a fucking powerhouse. If it thought Vista was trying to edit it's own registry, it would quarantine that fucker. AVG has been solid on 7 too.
With SEP, I set up a folder for my downloads then after my downloads are complete I run a scan on that folder. It also actively monitors my system, updates definitions daily and does a full scan once a week.

That almost sounds as if your computer is built devoted to running virus protection.
No virus protection here, also no viruses.

Any computer can get a virus, even Macs. Its just not as likely. I still like protection.

AVG with Malwarebytes and Zone Alarm free.
Although, I do have a cracked version of 360 and when the sub is due, there is a way to renew.
