So my wii starts acting up, not playing games, disc errors, etc. I call Nintendo, an of course the warantee expired in May. They tell me I can send it in for a flat rate of $75, but need to either pay $10 to ship it, or drive it to Scarborough, which is like an hour 15 each way. I look around and find a guy local that quotes me $50to fix it, and $35 to mod it. I elect to not mod t, I don't trust it just yet.

I get it back, Mario cart is playing fine. My son puts in Super Smash bros, no go. Meet the robinsons, no go. I am waiting to see if call of duty shits the bed too, but I am having my doubts. I email the guy ( this is the guy with the 60 day warantee) ad he says:

I played sponge bob for 2 hours without any issues whatsoever.
that is a new laser. I tried to make it fail but every game i put in worked.... I tried zelda, dragon warrior, spongebob, galaxy, mario kart all with no problems. my test is always will it read all my originals if yes then i play one and try to get an error.
I heard no odd sounds at all. there was a piece of rubber tube in the drive and the laser wouldn't read after i took that out as soon as i changed the laser everything read fine....

What the fuck does that mean???? All I want is my wii to work - is that so much to ask?

Oh, and by the way is it worth it to mod the thing for $35? Its a soft mod, not a hard mod so I suppose it can be reversed if I dont like it. Anyone out there done it?

The mod part can be done by you depending on whether or not you have version 4.0, but that's another story entirely, and I don't think they advicate that here.

There are parts out there that are knock off's of the original parts. In short, some of these cheaper lasers will have problems. In my personal opinion when it comes to the drives in any console, it's best to let the manufacturer fix it with original parts. Power supply, plugs, or non drive issues are pretty standard and therefore more easy to duplicate/replicate and repair.

A lot of what goes on with drive lasers has to do with focusing. A cheap laser can lack the accurate ability to focus on the data on the disk, giving you drive errors.

It could have been a faulty laser, who knows. I would take the games you're having problems with when you return the console for repairs.

It's a soft mod, a lot to it. I'll come back with more info on the mod, but would not do it if all you and your kid does is play regular games.

some one out there will correct me on this, but I believe it is just an SD memory card that they use to mod it.

From what I was just reading on it. Its done through the Legend of Zelda game. Yes you need the game to mod your system to play copied games. Seems pretty straight forward you might just want to do it yourself and save yourself the $30.

In Google search for

modding a wii +soft

first few links are very good and pretty straight forward.

Depends on the version of the firmware.

I know this is too little too late, but I just don't understand why someone wouldn't just send a console back to the manufacturer for repair. I understand its more money, but come on! I'd rather know it's being fixed by a professional, and get an official warantee back. I think you may have just been a rube on the midway as far as this goes.

Also, just to note: the Wii hack is mainly so you can play games from other regions, like Japan. And yes, there are some kick ass different games available via certain download sources.

This is what I was trying to find earlier. (http://nintendo-wii-homebrew-unlock-hack.blogspot.com/) Screw the purchase to, just google homebrew wii.

I would agree with you, except for the fact that the manufacturers warantee is expired. At this point there should be no difference between the two, besides cost. Of course after the fact there may have been a difference after all, but there was no way of knowing until now.

As an update, I tried all 15 games, and 11 of them did not work. 4 worked fine, no issues at all so it is conceivable that the games he used to bench test it did work. The guy contacted me back to tell me to bring it back with the games that aren't working so he can pinpoint the issue. I have faith it will work out, just too bad it is a hassle.

Ad as a side note, what kind of shit DVD/CD/Optical disc player dies after 14 months? I mean come on Nintendo, you have people lining up in the streets (or did when I bought it) to drop $300, the least they could do is put out quality stuff. The net gen isn't even announced yet, let alone released so the consoles aren't even going to make t the next gen before they need replacing!

Lets hope tomorrow works out for me.........

I would go ahead and mod it. This way you can play backups of your games. It's fairly easy to do, and I can give you some easy step by step instructions. It changes some settings, and allows you to play regular dvds in the drive, so who knows, those games that don't play now might read fine as copies.

If you're not comfortable with doing it yourself, maybe call the guy again and show him how the game doesn't read, and try to talk him into modding it for free. I doubt he put a brand new laser in it for that price.

Once it's modded, there are programs to take a game and turn it into a computer image file. This way you can play the image files, instead of the disks, so it wouldn't involve the disc at all. Just copy the image file to a flash drive, or better yet fill an entire external hard drive with images of all your games, never have to use the disc drive again.

The thing about consoles is, the laser isn't just moving in a linear movement the way it does on a dvd player, it constantly has to jump all over the disc. It also has to be exact, or it will just crash the game, so they burn out more quickly because the laser is turned up to a higher power, they burn out on all consoles eventually, depending on how much you play.

I would imagine the next gen will be on SD cards since they are so cheap now, and are getting so large.

Yeah, that's exactly why I wanted to mod it in the first place. I dont really care about the free stuff, but wit kids around scratched discs are a reality. I sucks you need to cheat to make backups of something you have already paid a license to use, but that's the way they do it these days.

I think I will get him to do it, between the backup ability and the ability to attach DVD's on the Wii (one less component on the shelf) it looks attractive.

And yes,I know things just break. I was just pissed is all. Thanks for listening to my rant buddays.

It's not illegal, as long as you're not downloading games, or copying games you don't own. Once you own something, you can do whatever you want with it.

I have the external hard drive hooked up to mine and it's great.

If you run into any issues after you get it done, just pm me.

Yeah, because that space is so utilized. One of the best games to pick up was the orange box, and 3 games were fit on a regular dvd.

i guess the huge memory on ps3 (compared to xbox) will be its downfall

the best games ever would all fit onto a dvd

but dont you want your games to be able to expand?

heres whats in for ps3
In the University Medical Center Groningen (UMCG) in the Netherlands, research is currently being geared towards the possibility of using Sony's PlayStation 3 in reading and reviewing x-rays. The gaming console would be used in extracting data, and the wait that comes with doing so in the usual method would be drastically reduced since the PS3 packs more power than the computers the hospital currently has.

Students are now working on creating special programs for the PS3, and are expected to be ready at the end of the year.

Since it's earlier in this thread, I just want to give you the RF.Net stance on modding.

You can hack your console, you can mod your console, you can tell people how to do it, you can link to it, you can show pictures when you're done (hell, you do bad ass mod casing, I wanna see it), you can talk about how to copy your games, you can tell someone how to back up a game (it's legal if you own it), you can link to instructions above. The only thing you CANNOT do is link to roms or post links to roms or share roms here in any way.

Thats awesome. I jut threw out my old NES because I couldnt give it away and the kids thought it was lame. I also still have my old Sega Genesis (working fine) and my Sega Game Gear (also working fine).

Quality has gone for a shit over the years, and we all just take it. I mean people are (were) paying $600 for a PS3, and when I went to pick up my Wii at the repair guys house tonight he had THREE of them sitting there waiting for their owners to pick up. At least the Wii was only 280.

And on a side note, all worked out well for me. The Wii is working great, no more issues. Of course I chickened out on the soft mod so I still cant back up my shit and the optical drive will probably die in another year, but oh well.

Maybe I will get up the courage to mod it myself one of these days.

What's holding you back from modding it?

The console does not have to be opened up, it's all done by software.

Your old games still play fine.

If for some freak reason they don't, you just reverse the process by clearing the memory, and letting nintendo put their software back on.

No changes are made at all to the hardware of the system.
