Gmail does an almost perfect job of segregating spam for me, but I'm still curious about something. When I look at the spam folder (to make sure there isn't anything there that isnt spam), I notice that some of the fake stuff somehow manages to partially use names of people that I do exchange emails with. How do they do this? Are they seeing inside my inbox?

I have maybe 1-2 spam mails on gmail and hotmail/ week so I click and see what they are. My old yahoo however has 100's and I never check them.

This happens to me occasionally too. Once, I got one from my friend's actual email address. I hit reply to all and got back several emails from her friends who had gotten the same spam message. It's like someone had hacked into her actual account. Freaks.

Spam is a guessing game, it could also come from places like Facebook, etc with the way web crawlers work now a days.

What I notice most is how they will use a name of someone I RECENTLY exchanged emails with. I exchange emails with my ex no more than once every few months. But when I do, I inevitably get spam with her new last name within a few days. It's always either the first or last name of the person, not what's in their actual email address. And Gmail ALWAYS recognizes it as spam.

For gmail I selected under account settings "secure login" making it more difficult for bots to crawl you account.

These same bots crawl facebook, etc for info people put their contact info such as email addy there.and many

Thanks! Now I just have to see if anything changes. I'm still very impressed by Gmail's ability to recognize spam. I only get 1 or 2 spams in my Inbox a year.
