View Full Version : Bored 90's Throwback Poll: Blur vs. Oasis

In the heady days of the mid-1990's, most of the world (or at least the parts that got British TV channels and magazines) were all a-buzz with the "battle" between Oasis and Blur as to which band was better. America collectively yawned, rolled over and inexplicably embraced Seven Mary Three, Candlebox and Live instead.
So I ask again, sleepy America, which band is better?
Blur:

Woo hoo eats a dick.
I really enjoyed Oasis in their time. I still throw on what's the story morning glory when I'm in such a mood. That album was a go to for me, still is. I consider it one of those precious few albums where I don't need to fast forward any of the tracks.

oasis thought they were the beatles (yawn)
blur had a hit then split, at least radio-wise.
blur spawned us life for the Gorillaz, and Oasis had two british brothers that hated each other.
hmm.
i'll take blur.
The correct answer is Pulp.

They dumped too many good to great songs as B-sides on their singles. They probably had almost two album's worth of really great songs that they banished like that. Emptied the rather shallow well too quickly.

You can only rewrite the Beatles catalog so many times.
It's pretty trendy to smash Oasis these days, because they were more popular at the time, and haven't necessarily evolved with music over time, and then because of the freakish tabloid shit that has plagued them pretty much since they hit, but they had some pretty fantastic albums.
Definitely Maybe through Masterplan is probably as strong a collection of four albums as you'll find from major acts in the decade.
Gorillaz work shouldn't really factor into this discussion on Blur's side. That's a whole different question.

I love those first four albums. Hell, I still enjoy Oasis to this day. Even if the albums aren't knocking me out there's always like 5-6 songs from each that end up on my iPod. It's just solid, stupid rock 'n' roll. I'd still like a Noel solo album, too.

It's not like they've ever hid that they're ripping of various bands left and right since day one. And they actually sounded like the Beatles, on, what, half a dozen songs? Noel Gallagher is obviously thief...he's just a very smart, very excellent thief. Oasis at their best is like a blender of all the best bits of classic from the late 60's into the 90's. I remember a review that described Definitely Maybe as sounding like a greatest hits album and that's probably the best way to describe it.

I fucking loved Oasis. Definitely Maybe came out like 2 months after I moved overseas and it was inescapable. I was all about the grunge and alternawhatever before that but it was just fun to have a band that didn't act like playing music and being famous was this horrible thing and were just churning out monster anthem after monster anthem. Between '94 and '97 I went nuts for Britpop, for better or for worse.
