Any Stargate fans here?
I just got through 10 years of SG-1 on Netflix and I'm now a full fledged fan. I've started on Atlantis and I'm looking forward to this new one, Stargate Universe, in October. It looks to be a lot darker and has a great cast.

As we speak I am on season 10 episode 17. I've seen them all now it will be twice through. I saw all the movies too. You should check them on netflix watch instantly.
I know I'll be watching Universe though, that's not even a question.

I am so happy to see a complete new cast and it even looks like they messed Stargate with BSG. This looks promising. I lost faith in Stargate: SG1 it became almost a cartoon and watching the will they or won't they dance with Carter and Jack got boring as hell.
I loved Atlantis until they added Tapping to the cast grrr.
So I am thrilled about the new version of the show.

Yea, I'll be watching Ark Of Truth and Continuum this week most likely. Putting in that last disc kinda bummed me out as I really liked where the show went in Seasons 9 & 10, especially the addition of Vala to the team, who I thought was hilarious. I also thought Mitchell was a great replacement. Too bad there wasn't another season or two.
It got me really interested in Claudia Black and I think I'll be watching Farscape next.

Me too, only because I saw Black & Browder and decided to give it a chance. BTW I rolled hard laughing at episode 200 where they made fun of Farscape and their made up curses.
Speaking of made up(or chinese) curses, I highly recommend Firefly. It was AMAZING.

They got boned??? SG-1 was on for 10 seasons and over 200 episodes. Richard Dean Anderson made more money than he ever made from MacGuyver and all the other actors went from being almost complete unknowns (save the Farscape gang) to bonafide celebrities, and banked some pretty good money too.
The show dispatched with not one, not two, but THREE "epic" enemies in its course and answered pretty much every question raised throughout the series (with the exception of the Furlings... El Oh El).
Maybe I'm missing something, though. In all seriousness... Precisely how did SG-1 get "boned"?

That's a good article - and the creators/writers would have to be virtually brain dead to screw things up as badly as Voyager did. Voyager screwed things up from the start, and aside from one or two good episodes or concepts, it was just a horrible show IMO.
It looks like SGU is going to learn from that and try to make it work. I am actually excited about the start of the series and hoping they will make a solid go of it.

And I am seeing both points here - both SG-1 and Atlantis felt like they were cut short. Both series were in the middle of major plot points that were not satisfactorily resolved. Although SG-1 had the follow-up movies to help wrap things up, Atlantis took the shortcut of flying the city back to Earth. What the hell is going to happen in the Pegasus Galaxy now? All of those civilizations are now set to be raped by the Wraith now that Atlantis took its city and went home. WTF?
However, each series did have a pretty solid run. I blame the lack of resolution more on writing and slack plot development than not getting enough time to work things through (especially RE: Atlantis). Personally I would have liked both shows to go for another couple of seasons, but the writing wasn't able to keep up with expectations and the premise was legitimately feeling a little worn by the end.

Basically exactly what MisterSmith is saying in the next post. SG-1 was barely into the Ori storyline. It took them 10 years to defeat the Goa'uld. The Ori were to be a bigger threat than they were and they took barely a 1/3rd of the time to annhilate them. They had replaced half the cast, not to mention the lead, and were just in starting to hit their stride with the revamped cast. Fans were just getting into the storyline when they wrapped it up.
Atlantis supposedly is supposed to get a movie or two as well. I think I heard that somewhere... So they can wrap the story up more. Who knows though. But yeah, a lot of questions were left unanswered, a lot of plot points never wrapped up. Like Smith said Pegasus is basically left for dead. Total let down ending to the series.

I liked a lot of Voyager. Unfortunately I missed most of the middle seasons because they moved it to UPN or whatever and my cable company didn't carry it. The stuff they did with the Borg towards the end of the series was really good. I only caught the last season or two and the first few I think. But yeah, when they reshowed the series on Spike a few years ago a lot of the show was pretty uninteresting between the majority of what I saw. If they learn from that, it could be interesting I guess.
But anything with Lou Diamond Phillips in it I have no faith in.

I liked Voyager also, it was very in-depth in terms of characters and how they fit into storylines, it's just that I was kinda young when I watched it religiously and now I remember very little.
On your point about Stargate, I totally feel like I was shorted on the Ori arc. These people were far more advanced than the Goa'uld. They were basically bad ancients. Although the movie did a good job tying up loose ends, they felt somewhat rushed.

I liked the concept of Voyager, but the execution blew dog nuts. And I agree that there were some good plot points, like working with the Borg and a couple of other things, but for the most part the acting and writing sucked.
EX: cooperating with the Borg to fight Species 8472 was really promising, but it all ended up being a reason to pull in 7-of-9 and change the series into new ways to show off her big tits every week.
Robert Picardo was the shining star of that show since he actually pushed for character development and cared about his performance. Most of the rest of the cast was simply unlikeable.
And Lou Diamond Philips is not a "Master Thespian," but I think his role in SGU will be well within his grasp. He has done some crap in the past, but he has also done some good stuff too (see: Supernova).

We've Seen The Darkest Stargate Ever: A Spoiler Free Take On SGU (http://io9.com/5354900/weve-seen-the-darkest-stargate-ever-a-spoiler-free-take-on-sgu)
Gone is the Stargate pattern of the crew getting themselves crew in danger with a freak-of-the-week problem, jokes, a sign of strength from the burly crew member, technical jargon, jokes, and then the leader saves the day with a wink and a smile. Not that I didn't love this attitude — both SGA and SG-1 were an easy way to spend each week in the company of characters who grew bit by tiny bit, while delivering the cleverly sharp Gate Banter. Even death on the old Stargate was rarely permanent, nor detrimental to any essential Stargate plot. Past Gates were as familiar as a warm blanket, and we loved them for that. SGU attempts to rip that old blanket off and light it it on fire right in front of your face. So Stargate purists beware: the new SGU may be a bitter pill for you to swallow.

Exactly - it is supposed to be something new and outside of the normal Stargate "box."
Of course there will be touch points (the Ancients, gate travel, some of the other tech, etc.), but the point is to get away from the other series and create something altogether different.

The show tried to do some things and failed more often than not. The characters weren't that compelling. I mean, when you include a fat nerd in a military expedition, you're just pandering to your hardcore audience, instead of making compelling drama.
Speaking of drama. Don't be so fucking melodramatic, what made SG-1 good was the mix of humor, action and sci-fi. Universe dropped the sci-fi and humor, ended up with a poorly done dramatic action show. Who wants that?

The show was really good this season, especially with all of the characters hitting their strides too.. They were so good together. The ending was a shame, but what else could they really do, except all make it back to Earth, but that would make Destiny's "mission" obsolete.
I really liked the two episodes that showed what happened to their other selves that went back in time. Started a civilization that lasted 2,000 years. Technologically advanced, and they had it all on record. Some of those keno videos were really touching and hilarious; what might have happened if they had stayed out there.
Considering the Stargate franchise had been on for - 16 years I think? - I don't see it going away permanently, but I also don't think Syfy will be putting up any money to close SGU's storyline soon. Planned direct to DVD movies for SG-1 and Atlantis have also been placed on hold indefinitely.
