Is there anyone on this board who is a Sr. or a Jr. (or a III or IV)? I have a couple of cousins who are both IV's. One of them has a very Italian name, even though at this point he's 1/8 Italian and half Korean. I think it could put a lot of pressure on a kid to live up that name. I know that some cultures don't do it at all, is it more common in some ethnic groups?

Also, I'm trying to think of Jr.'s that are more famous than Sr. to the point where when you say that name, you think of the Jr. first. For example, when you say "Cal Ripken" in baseball, you are generally referring to Jr. When you refer to the late Cal Ripken, you always say, "Cal Ripken Sr." Does anyone else get this distinction? I'm not including people who have non-famous fathers, like Ozzie Smith, who is technically Osbourne Earl Smith, Jr. (I don't know why I have 80's shortstops on the mind).

What is the reason behind the Sr/Jr/III/IV? Are people that uncreative with names that they just use what they already have, or are you guys such egomaniacs that you must see your name everywhere?

I was supposed to be IV.

But, I think my mother intervened.

I know 2 guys whose real first names are Charles and Lawrence

Both of their fathers are also named Charles and Lawrence, respectively.

Out of all four of them not one of them goes by their given first name- so the dads grew up their whole lives not liking their first name, using a different first name, but still saw fit to give their children that first name.

Thankfully, no.

I have the same first name as my father but a different middle name.

That caused enough confusion growing up.

If I ever have a son I'd NEVER do that to him.

I'm a Jr. and would never name a kid after me. Why live with someone who has the same name? It's confusing.

If I would have had my father's last name I would have been III. Also me having the name has nothing to do with my father wanting me to have his name or being unoriginal. My dad didn't even have anything to do with naming me. My mother gave me the first name Joseph because of the biblical source, and my middle name after my uncle. It just happened to be the same first and middle as my father, plus she knew I wasn't going to have his last name (certain racial/neighborhood reasons) so she wasn't worried about me being a III.

I'm a Junior...and I actually like being called Junior is family situations.

I used to just be called Little Eddie (of course my father was Big Ed), but now that I am bigger than him, it didn't seem to fit. Hence, the use of Junior.

Yeah my dad calls me Junior even though I'm a 3rd.. oh well just glad to be part of the team I guess.

Egomaniac checking in. When I have a son he will be the IV or I will name him Prince Crispy but I will call him blanket.

I think for some names that have a lot of nicknames it can work, but for other not. One of my friends I still have to call Frankie around his parents because in that setting, his dad is Frank. But he's definitely not a Frankie. You can always go the obscure nickname route, like Larry Wayne Jones, Jr. (aka Chipper Jones).

I just remembered.

I actually dated a chick who was a Jr. Same exact name as her mother. Even listed Jr. on her birth certificate. Never heard of that before, never heard of it since.

She was a fucking lunatic.

I wish I could remember their names, but there was a family (Mom, Dad, Son, Daughter) that lived down the street from me where the son was named after the father and the daughter was named after the mother.

I have quite a few friends that are Jr. and Sr. and III.

No... I am not the 8th...

Only a different middle name stops me from being a junior, although I do have a friends who's the ninth.

My parents were the laziest when it came to names. My older brother is a junior, my sister has the same name as my mother and me and my youngest brother have the same first and middle names only reversed.

I told myself I would never name one of my kids after me and neither of my sons is.

Same here, my middle name makes me not the 3rd.
