i bought a laptop for my father and it came with vista home basic.
the problem is, the fucking thing won't turn off. it just hangs in the logout screen.
any suggestions other than forcing him to buy a mac?

Is it one of the 1st times you've turned it on? It could be installing a lot of updates. What are the update settings? If they're automatic it could have been installing a shitload of updates the 1st few times you have to shut it down.

Since it's new, if it keeps happening send it right back.

It's probably some background process hanging things up. Try going into Task Manager just before trying to shut down, and manually end all processes except the totally necessary ones like explorer.exe and winlogon.exe. Then see if it shuts down any better.

If not, and it's one of those essential processes hanging things up, I'd probably just reformat and reinstall Windows, particuarly if it's a new computer. You might want to go ahead and grab a copy of the Windows 7 RC if you go this route. (Since it's a new computer, you get the Win 7 upgrade for free when it comes out.)

Or you could buy a Mac. ;)

Since it is new, you have either a bad load (ask Moe he recently experienced this) or y'all tried to install something that fucked up upon installation. If the latter, it hangs up in Windows' Services not allowing the lappy to complete the shut down. If this were XP, XP would force the termination of the program during shutdown.

What have you recently installed to include updates?

No, don't ask Moe about this because all you will get is a string of expletives. But yea, sometimes Windows just doesn't take. It would suck if it came new from the factory with a shitty install of Windows but I'm sure it happens.

i can't just reinstall windows or run the task manager because it's not my computer, it's my father's
and he's 70 and getting him to use a laptop was tough enough. he half belives that it's sorcery that runs the internet

My toshiba did. After the second crash (the one where I had a paper and a programming project to complete) I said fucc it and got a pirated Vista Ultimate and an activation patch. Not a single problem since. I have given too much to microsoft over the years to feel bad about stealing an OS. :furious:

Yea, but we don't really talk about piracy on the board.

( but I totally agree )

Well you're the one who has to fix it, so fix it however you have to. "Get" a copy of Vista, reinstall it, go back to the manufacturer's website, download all the Vista drivers and go.

OR

Call the phone number of the place he got it from. You might get help from them but it might be a hardware problem that they have to warranty. Now is the time to find that out.

are you hitting the power button on the bottom of the start menu?

Or are you hitting the arrow and going to "Shut Down"

Or have you tried holding the power button?

Even if he didn't get an extended warranty there has to be some sort of manufacturer's warranty or at the very least some sort of "No Lemon" type deal from the store.

Call.

ok, just so i didnt want to leave everyone awake at night wondering what ever happened to this laptop

i kind of fixed it. apprently some of the printer drivers were hanging on during shutdown. so i uninstalled the printer software. now it works fine.
granted, he can't print, but i'm looking to babystep him towards a fulling working computer.

i think eventually i'll have him switch to windows 7 when it comes out.
