This morning at work a bunch of people were wishing one of my co-workers a Happy Birthday. He is in a position superior to mine. I felt a little awkward standing there not saying Happy Birthday to him, but at the same time it wouldn't been very genuine since I had no idea it was his birthday until that moment. What would you have done?

What could it hurt to say Happy Birthday?

"Have a Good One". That would be simple enough...

I barely give a shit about my own birthday, so I think it'd be weird if another guy remembered my birthday from year to year.

if you were standing right next to him it wouldn't have been weird to just throw in a Hapy Birthday.

At my last job I only congratulated people I liked and interacted with after a while. For the over 3 years I worked there none of my b-days were ever acknowledged .
It wouldn't have bothered me all that much if they didn't list everybodies b-day on the welcome board every day and send out e-mails to come sign cards and have monthly free bagels and donuts for all the b-days of the month. But the person responsible for giving monthly lists to the receptionist and the main admin in the office did not like me and always omitted mine.
So I stopped signing cards unless it was a person I cared about or knew and also only said Happy Birthday to people I ran into on the day of.

Wait till later when he's drunk then try to have sex with him.

Is that your answer for everything?

even if you had no idea before then, once you knew it was his b'day what was the harm adding it? you could even go with "i had no idea...happy birthday!" if it makes you feel more "genuine".

Just say it, unless you hate the person and wish them a year of sadness.

This and birthdays suck. You truly only have one birthday.
