I think the story on "The Beatles" was they came up with the name because Buddy Holly called his group "The Crickets".
Fallout Boy: crappy band but great name. From the Simpsons and was chosen by their fans.

I heard the Monkeys were a play off from them.
As was the Turtles.
The Turtles were kinda messing around calling themselfs that.
However they did have a leg to stand on musically. (Flo & Eddie).

And did pretty well for themselfs.

Oh yeah the comic book bart & friends like.
I never knew that.

The best story would be how Led Zeppelin chose their name. Jimmy Page originally wanted Keith Moon as their drummer, but Moon turned it down because he thought it would be received like a "lead balloon".

Yo La Tango is a good story, but it's a baseball story and not their own.

I love the story of how the Butthole Surfers got their name. They didn't have a fixed name at first, and changed it at every show (including doing one show as The Inalienable Right To Eat Fred Astaire's Asshole.) But one show, an announcer got confused and read the title of their song "Butthole Surfer" as the name of the band, and it stuck.
And then, years later, they'd somehow have a mainstream hit, and terrestrial DJ's everywhere were nervously saying "Butthole Surfers" on the radio.

I also recall a story that John Lennon had had a dream about naming the band the Silver Beatles.

I remember when "Pepper" was a hit, hearing a DJ in northern Wisconsin refer to them as the "B.H. Surfers".

I really wish they'd kept The Inalienable Right To Eat Fred Astaire's Asshole, though.

Maroon 5 got their name when they were all sitting around smoking weed and discussing the ingredient list of one of the band member's can of mountain dew. yellow 5 is a dye used and their are other ones like blue 1 and red 3...so they went to ...maroon 5. ok that story is not true but it is remarkably similar to a conversation i had with my friends when i was camping last weekend.

oh ty Katja I need to search before I make threads.
Before someone says that Steely Dan
Is named after a ladys toy she keeps in her night stand.
That is not the case.
And would be gay on the bands part.
I get tired of hearing that misnomer.

You should tell that to their website (http://www.steelydan.com/faq.html):
With Fagen on keyboards and vocals and Becker on bass, they decide to sign up guitarist Jeff "Skunk" Baxter and drummer Jim Hodder. With the core band recruited, Donald and Walter need a name for their group. Since both of them were avid readers of 1950's "Beat" literature, they decided to name the band "Steely Dan" after a dildo in William Burroughs' "Naked Lunch."

I hear it so much because it might be the case.
What I heard was steely dan as a character's name in a crime novel.
And the guys from the band also said this in a pbs show I saw.
They must down play it.
From wikipedia.
Fagen and Becker named the band after "Steely Dan III from Yokohama," a strap-on dildo referred to in the William Burroughs novel The Naked Lunch.
Added note
An early band of Fagen and Becker had Chevy Chase on drums.

The band Yes.
The band members were coming up with a name.
The singer said he wanted a short name.
One member asked a short name?
Another member replied (Yes)

Krokus
The band name "Krokus" evolved from the word for a flower common to the region of southern Europe, the crocus. Early in the spring of 1975, band founder Chris von Rohr observed a field of these flowers while traveling by train. He was returning from L'Ecole des Chefs located in France after an aborted career in the culinary arts, and it was around this time the idea for a Metal band was formed. The band members stated that it was the perfect name, since it features "Rock" right in the middle.

It states that Krokus has turned more metal as of late.
They might be the only metal band named after a flower.
However Chris von Rohr is said to be rejoining the band.
Which could be a turn to prog rock. Like their first album is reported to be.
