So I'm tryin to expand my CD collection before IPods completely take over.

My goal is to try and complete the Rolling Stones 500 greatest albums.

However I don't want to drop 20 bucks everytime I buy a CD.

Does anyone know of a place in either NYC or online that sells discount CDs?

Spend a day in used stores and pawn shops and you should probably find the majority of your list...especially the Pearl Jam, Kiss, and Public Enemy titles.

And who charges $20 per disc? I keep seeing that figure brought up in threads, but nobody sells them for that much.

realmenhatelife
07-16-2009, 05:47 AM
You should check out Pawn Shops and Good Will, they're the best places around me to get CDs and DVDs really cheap.

This isn't really IPods fault, you cant charge a lot of money for a continually watered down product that is readily available, in a wider variety, for free and expect to stay in business. If CDs all cost 10 bucks I think people would still be buying them.

Nearly every record store that I frequent has a used section either separate or among the rest. Unless you're sticking with Best Buys etc., I find it hard to believe that it would be hard to find cheaper CDs at really any Independent spot; which most that are left tend to be.

Secondly, and this is obviously subjective, but is Rolling Stone really the authority from which you want to shape your musical taste/opinion? They lost me a long, long time ago. I believe Casey pointed out a flaw or two in the list just out of those first ten.

Also check out The Colony (http://www.colonymusic.com/) while you're there (although you'll have to go up to 50th). They have great stuff there. I'm not sure if they sell used CD's, but it's definitely worth checking out.

I use an Ipod but rarely download. I still have a thing with having the physical product in my hand, leafing through the album literature, art work etc. Also, the whole process of cherry picking songs from records has never appealed to me. But, to each their own.

I never cherry pick, I always put the whole album on. I also hate ripping CDs so I'll download something I actually own. I like when there is extra stuff in a cd book, but I don't see that a whole bunch.

I actually have never bought an iPod. My only exception is my Inno were I get R&F joyness plus a few extra bits I keep on there.

But my whole thing is I would like to just knock out a list of ten in one visit and not drop about 80 bucks.

Amazon is cheap but then they get you with shipping, and I'd rather pay cash.

Can you believe I'm 23, I sound like an old teabag. (no offense if you are older, I love you like my unborn children)

If you price up the cds I linked, it comes out to $75 with shipping, so it meets your $80 budget. Can't help you with the cash part. Amazon will let you pay through your checking account though.

Because i would lose interest as the albums got worst. i'm basically doing the same thing right now with movies. using my netflix i've been going down the AFI 100 greatest movies from 100 to 1. and the movies get better all the time.

It absolutely doesn't. You are right. But hits are hits because they are somehow influential. If this is a list of top 500 records or whatever. You would HAVE to think Cyndi's record WAS WAY MORE SOCIALLY IMPORTANT then Vitalogy. Certainly not ten or Vs. But Vitalogy? absofuckinglutely.

As someone else said, thrift shops, like Goodwill and Salvation Army, may be the way to go now. In these days of digital files, some people are so detached from tangible media itself, that they mass dump entire collections there rather than eBay or haggle at a shop for cash.
