When you take a driving test...
they test your knowledge of driving, with the written test
and they test you with low speed challenges; left turns, u-turns, parallel parking
why dont they test highway skills?
if someone cant drive above 40 mph then how can they be licensed?

I've only taken two driving tests in my life. The first one was 24 years ago, and they did have me drive on a US highway for about half a mile or so at 45MPH. The second one was about 17 years ago. No highway this time, but we were on a 35MPH road. Are you saying they only do a parking lot test where you live?

no, they take you out on a 35 mph (semi)residential road, thats where they test left turn at light, stop at stop sign, and parallel park. i guess they also watch if you check you mirrors and wear a seatbelt and shit.
but no one who takes the test ever goes over 30 mph

No wonder the world is full of crappy drivers!
BTW... The guy who tested me the first time was a moron. ? The test route had me drive down the highway and change into the left lane to enter a left side off ramp. Before I changed lanes (at 45mph) I checked the mirrors, then looked over my shoulder at the blind spot. He asked in a challenging tone, "Why did you look over your shoulder?" I said, "Because I'm supposed to." He said, "Oh."

My wife just took her road test and there was no highway. I think its a pretty dumb way to judge a driver. You're tested more on the test itself than actually driving.

In PA you have to have your permit for x ammount of time, and you're supposed to log so many hours with it, and then you dont get an adult lisence for a few years (I think, I was one of the last years when you could get a full license right away.) I think they assume you will get comfortable with all that stuff then.
On Top Gear they showed how in Finland, because the roads are somewhat challenging, you have to do all kinds of all weather driving tests and lessons, and it takes some crazy ammount of time to get an adult license. They let little kids race rally cars and stuff, Fez would shit himself.
