These two words are synonyms...for the most part. They each represent the endgame... a predetermined result of events, but they are words that have different tones. Fate (http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/fate) is something associated with disaster and death... while destiny (http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/destiny) is associated with fortune and power.

Is this the way you discern these two words? Do you generally see a difference in them? Do you think the choices you make result in destiny or fate, or are we born to one or the other?

I don't know if we each have a destiny, or if we're all just floating around accidental-like on a breeze, but I, I think maybe it's both. Maybe both is happening at the same time.

Like you said, "fate" and "destiny" are basically synonymous....but i never thought about how "fate" has a more negative overtone than "destiny."

But its true. When someone dies, the news says they "met their fate," not met their "destiny."

never thought about it, but i guess the fact that "fate" is a connotation of "fatal" makes it more negative.

regardless, it's obviously a combo of nature and nurture that makes a life. clearly you can coach up your dwarf son to be basketball player but that element of nature makes it impossible for him to excel. people are born with limitations but theyre not born with a decided outcome.
